An exclusive triple-bill of indie acts, featuring Singapore’s own Shelves, American surf-rockers Wavves and Icelandic experimental band Múm, will be held on 15 June, 8pm at Zouk. The night will be a sonic treat, opening with Singaporean pop-rock group Shelves, known for their powerful pop tracks with soaring guitars, as they sing with heart-on-sleeve sincerity. Their debut album in early 2012 was
warmly received with The Straits Times calling it a “crisp distillation of early 1990s scuzzy-fuzzy American collegiate rock and feel-good sentiments”. Then the p***y Wavves will thrill clubbers with their grungey sound, an homage to post-punk, complete with a laissez faire attitude that is so representative of sunny, surf-friendly California in a 45-minute set. With their music described by Pitchfork as “vocal hooks [which] come fast, usually propelled by titanic drumbeats nicked from 1960s girl group music”, Wavves’ tracks nevertheless possess “thrilling evidence of compelling, thoughtful craftsmanship”. The concert closes with an hour-long show by lo-fi Múm, whose style is characterised by the combination of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Starting out in 1997, Múm produces songs which bewitch and enchant with their rich aural atmosphere. Allmusic regards them as “equal parts early Aphex Twin atmosphere, [with] glitchy clicks reminiscent of Autechre, and dramatic musical elements that evoke the sorrow and glory of compatriots Sigur Rós” . Tickets are available now on zoukclub.com at $80.
