Still waiting for me

After two years of being out of work, there is still a lot of work to do in my pottery studio.

It will probably have to wait until the summer because I don't have time for it right now.

My pottery workshop after two years

I last fired up the kiln two years ago. Since then it's just been gathering dust and boxes of various things.

I hope to be able to clean it up in March.

I still have quite a few half-finished pots and a bunch of new ideas.

💙 Blue — Beautiful but Tricky 🎨

Blue is one of the most popular colors among people, especially bright azure and greenish shades. Of all colors, it seems to attract the most attention. But… there’s a catch.

Blue is special: it’s tricky to coordinate with other colors in your home.
If you simply love a certain shade of blue on its own, there’s no problem — you don’t have to worry about furniture or decor. But if matching it matters a lot, choosing the right shade can be surprisingly difficult.

Many people think: “My furniture is exactly this color, so it should match perfectly.” But often, even the smallest difference becomes very noticeable.

Sometimes, the best solution is to go for a completely contrasting color instead. That small mismatch between a vase and your furniture can stand out more than using a color that’s “almost the same”. 🎨✨

Blue is beautiful, but as any interior designer will tell you: shades matter more than you think! 🏡💫

Red flower pot

I made this design for a florist. At first I thought the shape was a bit strange and plain, but once the pots were made, they turned out to be really good: simple, elegant and effective.

A little disappointment.
I made this pot for a presentation at a local crafts fair. The pattern depicts the history of the railway through the town, which is over 100 years old.

The evaluator rejected it because it was too robust or unfinished. But they accepted all the local beekeepers with honey.

I wasn't angry or disappointed, but I don't go to the fairs anymore. I sold the whole batch right away.

Beautiful glaze, but toxic
The fiery red-orange glaze is made from a transparent base with the addition of cadmium and selenium. Although this is encapsulated in the glaze, it is still dangerous, as quite a bit of dust is raised during production when sanding the dry glaze from the bottom of the pot. The fired glaze is not dangerous, but I would not recommend it for use in the kitchen for food.

Simple white with blue crystal glaze
For this pot, I used a regular white glaze and a crystal blue that I made myself. The blue is made from a regular clear glaze, with the addition of flux, cobalt, and zinc.

Cactus in ceramic pot
Escobaria sneedii ssp. leeii is a miniature that belongs in every collection. It is a winter-hardy species. It can remain in a unique ceramic pot for several years, as it grows very slowly.
It is shown here with a scale in centimeters.

Orchid Pot with Raised Bottom
Orchids are popular houseplants that need a special pot that allows regular and thorough watering of the plant. Orchids are usually planted in bark, so watering from the top is not enough. The substrate must be soaked well for a few hours so that the water is absorbed into the bark. Orchid pots have a double edge inside the pot so that the substrate is well soaked, and the water remains at the bottom of the pot for some time.
When making my orchid pots, I prefer to use a more original shape, so that the legs of the pot are higher. The bottom is higher and allows the water to drain from the substrate.

Keep an interesting shape with easy process
A clay pot made using a one-piece mold can also have a more interesting shape. The model should be shaped so that the casting falls out of the mold nicely.

Glaze problems
Error. I fired a whole series of black pots without trying it first. The glaze ran, stuck to the plate and left dark spots.
Black glazes contain a high proportion of metals, especially copper, manganese and cobalt. The metals evaporate due to the high temperature and cause problems.
