It has been always like that. Yes it is super fine if the floor plan is nice and tidy and all perfect on a piece of paper. ...but in reality people are diverse and have need that do not comply to nice geometrics... they need the shortes and the most comfortable way...so this is the reason we design sensibly - with people for the people, to be functional :)
