Our Gbendembu, Goderich location is where it all began. This is actually my dadโs property situated on a vast 1.5 acre swampy land with a bungalo house upfront and outstretched in the backyard is this beautiful arrangement of mangoes, lime and palm trees. It is really a tropical paradise in itโs own right found right at the cusp of the Peninsular. The swampy marshland itself was unkempt, had a lot of debris from years of thrash and stuff being thrown there; it was also sort of a throughway for neighbors since it wasnโt fenced.
I had always loved plants and had something growing wherever I was. One of my favorite places to be is a garden center. The beautiful scents and vibrant colors of the herbs and flowers captivated me so much that I always felt relaxed and uplifted. I had a good friend in Toronto who grew the most marvelous tomatoes right in her front yard in a space big enough for just two lawn chairs. It was simply amazing to me that she had such bountiful harvests and all grown organically, too! I was so inspired by what she could do. She had a compost pile where she diligently dumped all her kitchen scraps like eggshells, banana and onion peels, etc. into a hole she had dug and keeps it covered to keep the heat in. After a couple of months, this decomposed organic matter is what she mixes with some garden soil and uses to plant her tomatoes.
When I left Toronto for Sierra Leone, I took with me a bag of organic vegetable composting soil and one watering can. I didnโt know it then but somehow the gardener in me was slowly manifesting itself; my secret desire was to grow plants! This bag of (black gold )soil so named because of its rich dark organic matter was the first one we used to nurse the first seeds(green/runner beans, Chinese cabbages & yard long beans) when we decided to convert my dadโs backyard into a vegetable garden. We hired a group of Master Gardeners from Gloucester Village( My husband and I got inspired by their gardens and all the creative ways they made use of every single land space available to grow vegetables that was sold to the local market. The picture above shows the four men who tore up the barren soil in that swamp(as you can see in the photo), cleaned every last bit of debris and almost magically turned this once useless plot into raised beds deliberately laid out to accommodate as many plants as we can fit in.
We have grown over 20 different vegetables since then including; red onions, kale, tomatoes, runner beans(green beans), cauliflower, lettuce, spring onions, garden eggs and okra. We recently built one greenhouse at the Gbendembu location where we currently grow bell/sweet peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and habanero peppers(one of the hottest peppers). Our open field location at Ogoo Farm is an extension arm of the Gbendembu Goderich garden to meet the needs of our growing customer base. Our location at 6 Mile(6 miles from Waterloo) is a 5 acre lot that houses our second greenhouse, the largest yet in Sierra Leone) We grow about 700 plants in there and we also have an open field area where we grow a lot more!
