Common name: Sycamore fig
Scientific name: Ficus sycomorus
Swati name: uMkhiwa

The sycamore fig tree, is a versatile tree that thrives in various environmental conditions, making it suitable for planting in several locations across Eswatini.

Its planting at home is often associated with several beliefs and practices that reflect its value beyond mere aesthetics or utility.

Cultural belief- In many cultures, the sycamore fig is seen as a symbol of abundance and prosperity. This belief stems from its historical role as a vital food source in ancient civilizations, including Egypt and Israel. The tree’s ability to produce fruit year-round makes it a desirable addition to homes, where it is thought to bring wealth and nourishment to families.

Spiritual belief- Culturally, the expansive canopy of the sycamore fig is associated with protection and shelter. In traditional settings, these trees are planted near homes not only for their fruit but also for the shade they provide during hot seasons. This practical aspect reinforces the belief that having a sycamore fig nearby can create a more comfortable living environment.

Medicinal Uses- Various parts of the tree, including its bark and leaves, are used in traditional medicine to treat ailments such as coughs and digestive issues. This medicinal use further enhances the tree’s status within local belief systems as a provider of health and well-being.

We have sycamore figs available in 40, 60, 150 and 200 liter bags at the nursery shop.

Over the next few months we will post about the cultural and medicinal significance of some of our trees, starting with the Fever tree!

Common name: Fever tree
Scientific name: Acacia xanthophloea
Swati name: uMkhanyakude

The fever tree is a well-known African giant, indigenous to Eswatini. It naturally occurs in warm climates, and can often be found in wet areas, along rivers and at water edges. The lowveld areas along the base of Lubombo Mountain is where they naturally occur in Eswatini.

The fever tree has important cultural significance in Eswatini. It is believed to act as a protective barrier against negative energies, emotional disturbances and to bring light to one’s life. Its presence in a space is thought to create a shield that helps maintain balance and harmony within the environment and home.

Fever tree extracts have traditionally been used to alleviate pain associated with conditions like rheumatism and muscle cramps.

We have fever trees available in 20, 40, 60, 150 and 200-litre bags at the nursery shop.
