Red Mexican sunflower, not a true sunflower but a great lookalike nevertheless, has multiple purposes that a lot of us didn't even know it had.
They help improve the soil by aerating it and pulling up calcium, phosphorus, and potassium that's deep in the soil. By cutting them when they're mature and letting them rot on top of the soil, they add even more minerals and compost back into it, building it up even more.
These bushy plants are also great as feed for animals such as rabbits (in moderation), chickens and other birds, goats, sheep, and cows. When these livestock eat Red Mexican sunflower plants, they get protein, fiber, and different minerals from them.
These plant are bushy shrubs that's easy to care for, don't require much hands on maintenance, are heat tolerant, and are moderately drought tolerant. They can normally reach a height of 2–5 ft, depending on how well they're cared for. The flowers produce a slightly pleasant fragrance until they start to wither. They're also great at attracting butterflies, especially the King swallowtail butterfly.
