This is our new project in Kaohsiung. The buildings, which are more than 90 years old(it was built sometime between 1900 and 1940), are located on Shintong Road in the Ciaotou district in an exclusive downtown business area. One of the buildings in the d
ormitory complex has been designated by the city as historic relic, while 3 others have been listed as historic monuments. The property, which is partly owned by Taiwan Sugar Corporation, is the city's first protected cultural asset that comprises a group of buildings. The dormitory buildings once came under threat as the area became more developed, but local residents and cultural activists were unyielding in their efforts to preserve the complex and the many surrounding big old trees, according to the city department. Under the restoration project, one of the wooden houses designated as a historic monument will first be dismantled because of serious structural damage, then it will be restored to its original appearance, according to the city's Department of Cultural Affairs. The residents in the area already have plans to develop a cultural creative industry in the complex that was built in the era of Japanese colonial occupation to provide accommodation for Japanese officials. And the director of the department will invite local residents to help manage the building after the restoration work is completed.
