What exactly do we want to preserve and rebuild in the regeneration of old buildings?
Last weekend (22-23 November 2025), a joint talk by Taiwanese and Japanese architect designers, was the first event held at the 184 JC. Employee Canteen. A lively BBQ party with DJ music, cocktails, and engaging lectures, left everyone satisfied and it was a resounding success. Making us even more excited for the future events at this space!
From the presentations, we realized that the reconstruction of old buildings is not merely about adjusting the structure itself, but also about redesigning the relationship between time and land. As Mr. Masato Ashida mentioned regarding the Japanese concept of "Fûdo" (風土), it emphasizes the deeper relationship formed between people and the land through long-term interaction.
For the cases from Japan, the RYUGON in Niigata and JR Noboribetsu Station in Hokkaido are not just about restoration, but about rediscovering the "Fûdo" of the land through the renovation of the space. In Taiwan, Johnny Chiu, founder of JC. Architecture & Design, has created "JCA Living Lab," a space that transforms Japanese colonial-era buildings into his own residence. This is also an experiment, attempting to "reboot" stagnant Japanese-style homes, allowing time to flow again and carrying new stories.
Regardless of size, the project connects the past and future of the land, transforming stories into immersive spaces where people can step inside—"Architects are also storytellers."
