As the world comes together to celebrate World Environment Day 2026, CAN Tanzania proudly reflects on a week of action, learning, and community engagement in Zanzibar.

Aligned with the global theme: "Climate Action" and Zanzibar's theme: "Jamii inaanza na wewe, chukua hatua katika kukabiliana na athari za mabadiliko ya tabianchi kwa kuilinda Zanzibar yetu" our community-led interventions in Chuini and Tumbatu achieved the following:

✅3,320 mangrove seedlings planted
✅About 2,145 kg of waste collected, sorted, and properly disposed.
✅40 beehives handed over to the Tumbatu community to kick off beekeeping activities.
✅Over 400 primary and secondary school students trained on solid waste management and environmental responsibility.

This proves that small actions can create lasting impact and time, strengthening the climate resilience of our communities.

This is not the end for us, as a think and do tank, we continue to work hand in hand with the government and local communities in policy and community work to speed up climate action in Tanzania.

Day 4, towards World Environment Day 2026, brought us back to Tumbatu, where we visited Primary and Secondary Schools to continue our campaign on proper waste management awareness.

What stood out to us was the students’ commitment to take action based on the training they received. Truly, the future belongs to young people, and giving them the right environmental knowledge today means stronger, cleaner, and more climate-conscious communities tomorrow.

Let’s keep the conversation going, at school, at home, and in every community.

Yesterday, 2nd June 2026, was day 3 of our World Environment Day journey, and its actions speak for themselves.

In collaboration with Chuini Shehia leaders, Chuini Community Welfare Group, CAN Tanzania network members, and trained students from Primary and Secondary, we collected waste and demonstrated segregation in practice.

The action in Chuini will keep the community clean and healthy while inspiring others to do the same.

Day 2 of our World Environment Day 2026 journey took us to Chuini for a session on solid waste management awareness.

At Chuini Primary and Secondary Schools, we had engaging discussions on waste awareness, responsible disposal, and the important role young people play as environmental change makers. We sincerely thank the school administration for the warm welcome, support, and commitment to environmental education.

We also celebrate the students for their promise and dedication to keep their schools and home environment clean. Their commitment is a powerful step toward building responsible, healthy, and sustainable communities.

When children learn to protect the environment, entire communities benefit. With knowledge, action, and consistency, a green legacy can be achieved.

The Road to World Environment Day 2026!

Today, 30th May 2026, CAN Tanzania, in collaboration with the First Vice President’s Office (FVPO), has kicked off a series of community actions to mark the inauguration of World Environment Day 2026 on 5th June.

Today, we joined efforts with Tumbatu community leaders and citizens to plant mangroves in the degraded area of Tumbatu Island. To us and the community, these are more than trees; they symbolize hope, resilience, and a greener future for our communities. Every seedling is a step toward climate action and a healthier island for generations to come.

This week, we will engage in several activities, such as mangrove planting, waste management awareness in schools, and waste collection activities in the community.

Follow this journey with us all week as we grow impact, one community at a time.

On World Bee Day 2026, we celebrate the power of pollinators and the communities keeping them. Through beekeeping initiatives in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, CAN Tanzania is supporting livelihoods diversification, protection of biodiversity, and climate resilient development.

Our goal goes beyond honey; we are protecting forests, supporting biodiversity, and creating sustainable livelihoods.

Reach out to us, learn about our approach, and support our work.
