The Eiffel Tower was not created as a monumental masterpiece, but as a temporary exhibit of the World Exhibition dedicated to the centenary of the French Revolution. Gustav Eiffel calculated that it would last for a maximum of 20 years.

The first modern skyscraper is considered to be the Home Insurance Building, which was built in 1885 in Chicago. It had 10 floors and a height of 42 m. Despite its not very impressive characteristics, it was the first modern skyscraper built with a steel frame.
