A single native tree still surviving a degraded landscape can be a source of hope and inspiration to do more and do better.

This majestic croton macrostachyus is our guiding light at our upcoming restoration project near Isunga.

Happy International Day of Forests!

At Nyanza Ecological, we strongly believe that tropical forest ecosystems are some of the most critical ecosystems that will ensure a habitable planet for humans and all life on earth. We must do everything to protect remnant forests and restore former forest landscapes back to thriving forest ecosystems.

The Chimps, our closest of all relatives, are a perfect mirror of our past and our future. And together with other great apes, their future is forever tied to ours - if we continue to destroy their habitats, they’ll definitely disappear - but that will be at our own peril.

Our singular mission is to restore degraded tropical forest habitats at scale in the Albertine rift - a region where the greatest numbers of great apes still call home in their natural habitats.

This is how it all begins!

The trees that make the forests we plant begin as little seeds that are germinated in seedbeds. These Albizia Labek seedlings are no better than a garden bean at this stage; but will grow into giant trees that can live for over a century. And we are never afraid to set off those little seeds on what will be a very long life.

The toads of Kibale! Like frogs, toads are amphibians but differ from most frogs because they have dry skin, warts, crests behind the eyes, and parotoid glands. The parotoid glands produce a poisonous secretion that helps the toad defend itself from predators.

“When in doubt, plant something. The same energy mending the soil mends your soul. The love you pour into plants returns as that air you breathe. The lemon grass you planted to stop soil erosion becomes the aroma that invites you still stay and sip more. The birds that build nests in the thickets are the company with a melody. Ecological restoration literally translates into soul restoration.” ~ , Program Lead, Community Conservation

Planting season! No such time of the year is as exciting; challenging and inspiring in equal measure. Now in the middle of the season, with 60,000 tropical forest trees planted and another 50,000 to go, we can’t help it but be grateful for the opportunity to assist mother nature to recover and thrive.

Prunus africana. One of our signature tropical forest tree species we plant on our restoration sites. This planting season, we have already planted over 10,000 Prunus africana seedlings.

Prunus africana is a tropical hardwood tree, it’s young leaves are rich in protein and therefore a preferred by primates and elephants alike, and it’s bark is proven to be highly medicinal with anti-prostate cancer remedies.
