The Fall Event Tour Day got off to a wet start, but this Group knows how to endure and make the best of it! We didn’t let a little rain slow us down!

We started the day off at Burger Farm and Garden Center where they were set up for their 50th Fall Festival. No doubt there’s a tremendous amount of effort that goes into this event that could rival with many county fairs and why generations of local families have been coming to Burger Farm for so many years.

Stop 2 was Benken Garden Center & Florist where we were wowed with their facility and creativity. It was obvious they pulled together all their talent and spared no effort with a mock wedding and scavenger hunt for wine and roses delivered to the hotel.

Stop 3 took us to Natorp’s Nursery Outlet - a unique 333-acre plant nursery, landscape design firm, a retail store, and online plant store where we enjoyed lunch. They offered riding tours of their wholesale growing area and allowed us to explore their checkout area featuring double queue lines feeding into 16 registers and cash wraps designed by Robert Hayter.

Stop 4 was Berns Garden Center & Landscaping where we were greeted by Cherie Berns, the 94 yr. old matriarch. The operation includes two greenhouse locations with more than 120,000 square feet of growing space and two retail locations. The main retail store has 10,000 square feet of retail space, a greenhouse with 12,000 square feet of plant display and 22,000 square feet of outside covered shopping area. Berns grows most of the color they sell.

Stop 5 was at White Oak Gardens sitting on 4.5 acres with a 12,000-square-foot, ultra-modern greenhouse that’s a high-tech take on the classic A-frame greenhouse structure, complete with retractable glass panels and outdoor weather station monitors, all run by computers - built by Prospiant. Jeff has built a beautiful place for plants and filled it with family and staff who love to work with plants and people. It’s obvious his staff is a big reason for their success.

We finished the day at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden - an amazing fusion of plants and animals. We explored the beautiful trial gardens then took some time to enjoy a reception co-sponsored by Ball Seed and Eason Horticultural Resources.

A big thank you to all of the wonderful centers for welcoming us and sharing their stories! And a shout out to all of the attendees for helping us keep on schedule! The Fall Event 2023 Tour Day can go down in the books as a success!

Last Tuesday on the way to Darwin Perennials Day, I was able to see a glimpse into what I have for years hear what giants like Dirr, Rauston, Shadow and others have revered as “The Champion of Trees”… The Morton Arboretum. What an amazing 1,700 acres of what might be be the closest to heaven. Special thank you to Kim Shearer and Nathen Moren for guidance to make the most of just a few hours. I have to go back for more!

I want to share the experience when you approach the visitor center… 3 beautiful Slender Silhouettes… found and named by Don Shadow!

Karen and I were blessed to be with Don when he showed us the mother tree on the lake he had found of this great selection. Often we don’t realize where you are when in the presence of brilliance and greatness. We know now.

Seeing Darwin Perennials Day at Ball Hort’s trial Garden’s was a wonderful experience!

Last Wednesday, June 21st, was the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. And it was also the Darwin Perennials Day at Ball Seed headquartered in West Chicago, IL. What a beautiful day to celebrate and share so much about this important category, Perennials. That Wednesday morning, I had the thought... it's the perfect day to be thinking about Perennials... the longest day of the year for the longest-running plant category (for herbaceous plants at least). The Garden Center Group had the honor of presenting the keynote at lunch to share sone of of The Group’s best Centers for Perennials Stars!

A Special THANK YOU to these Perennial Stars: Zander Caruso, Brynn Daniels, Erin Melbert, Alexander Mohn, and Renee O'Brien, who helped make our time at Darwin Perennials Day at Ball Seed a time well spent as we provided a large number of attendees a glimpse of the power of sharing throughout The Group!

Last week we heard about new ideas for a pumpkin house Joey Bokar at Kerby's Nursery had shared with JD Boone at Dothan Nurseries. Inspiration came from seeing Cheekwood Garden's pumpkin house last year at The Fall Event in Nashville (first photo). Joey's idea was to produce something much more practical – actually more of a facade. Joey (and JD) wanted to produce something that could display all sizes and act as an entrance or attraction for their pumpkin and gourd sales area.

Mission accomplished! JD called me to say the reaction to the new Pumpkin House was amazing. On Saturday they had as many as 30 people at a time waiting in line to take their own photos.

A thing that is absolutely necessary.

Yes, We Are Essential!

This past spring has taught us all something very important... gardening is essential! The power of plants and gardening is recognized more today than ever before. But we are just getting started. What lies ahead can be much bigger than what is behind us. How should you position your center to be assured you are recognized as "essential" in the future?
