Houseplants are a delightful addition to any indoor space, bringing a touch of nature and beauty to our homes. In the past few weeks, I've had multiple people call me to ask why their plants look so bad or die. When I ask, what changes have happened to the plant, the overwhelming response is "I put them outside to get some sun". That response nearly confirms that the problem is sun scald, a condition that can affect houseplants when exposed to intense sunlight.

Sun scald, also known as sunburn, refers to the damage caused by excessive exposure to intense sunlight. This condition primarily affects the leaves of houseplants but can also affect other parts of the plant. Sun scald occurs when the plant's tissues are unable to cope with the intense sunlight, leading to discoloration, wilting, and ultimately, irreversible damage.

Our pampered house plants are adapted to thrive in the filtered light conditions found in their natural habitats. When exposed to intense, direct sunlight for prolonged periods, their leaves become damaged....See More

You know you are a true plant lover when "Thirsty Thursday" reminds you of all the plants that need extra watering this week.

Some of our thirstiest plants are the peace lilies, African violets, cavendish bananas, tradescantia, jasmine and bird of paradise. We find that these plants just won't tolerate being dry. These plants need watered at least 2-3 times a week during the warmer months.

What are some of your thirstiest plants?

It's Tillandsia Tuesday! Show off your Air Plants!

Tillandsia are low maintenance and uniquely shaped members of the bromeliad family (think pineapple tops). These plants make great additions to mount displays.

They require no soil, bright indirect light, occasional misting and a 10 minute water bath every other week.

With proper water, light and feeding, your tillandsia may even change color and produce blooms.

We will have small, medium and extra large air plants in stock this week. Stop by and get yours. We are open Wed-Sun.

We field a lot of calls during the summer about house plants. One of the most common is, "I put my plant outside and now the leaves are brown and dying. Why does it look like this?"

Yes, plants do need sunlight in order to grow, but most of the common houseplants cannot deal with direct, bright, scorching sunlight. They will get sun burned and will either become bleached out, leaves will turn dark and drop off or the plant may wither and die.

When we think about tropical climate we think of places where the temperature is above 80 with an abundance of sun and modest humidity of 50-60%. A majority of houseplants originate from tropical areas around the globe and grow on the floor or understory of the forest. Their idea of a tropical climate means temperatures between 70-85 degrees, high amounts of humidity (70-85%), dappled or tree filtered sunlight and in some tropical areas very high levels of rainfall.

Nearly, every houseplant can gradually be transitioned outside once temperatures are consistently above 65F to areas that mimic the same lighting received in your home. This is done slowly each day over a period of 7-10 days. Doing this will help prevent sun burning your green babies.
