Started a large plaster restoration project in Williamsville NY.

Restoring a wall and a swirl ceiling in this Williamsville home. The homeowner is adamant about using plaster, so no drywall allowed.

We hope to have the plastering done tomorrow, but possibly Monday (realistically). Matching that swirled ceiling should be fun :)

Before we started, and how far we got today, thats plaster basecoat, tomorrow we will apply the finish coat of plaster. Its a little rougher than I normally like it, but we will smooth it out tomorrow!

Water damage from ice dams has been a theme this year and this Cheektowaga project was no exception.

After repairing the water damaged plaster, we waited two weeks before painting (one of the trade-offs with real plaster work). From there:

• Skim coated the ceiling - not once, not twice… but 3 times
• Repaired all wall damage before even thinking about paint
• Worked around drying times to stay on schedule
• Adjusted on the fly when coverage and finish didn’t meet our standard

We don’t paint over problems. Everything gets fixed first. Period.

The ceiling needed that third skim coat because it just wasn’t right after two. The wall color needed extra coats to properly cover. That’s the reality of doing the job correctly and it’s built into how we operate.

No change orders. No “unexpected cost” conversations. If it takes longer, that’s on us.

Final result: smooth ceiling, durable walls (we used Behr ScuffDefense for better abrasion resistance), and a living room that actually holds up to real use.

Water-damaged plaster jobs are unpredictable. The scope almost always grows once you open things up. But the transformation at the end makes it worth it every time.

If your ceiling or walls have water damage, especially from this winter, it’s not something to ignore.

📞 Reach out to Carrigan Painting we’ll fix it the right way.

Water Damage Ceiling Repair – Plaster Restoration (Part I)

We kicked off a project this week in Cheektowaga (Cleveland Hill) repairing a water-damaged plaster ceiling and wall, and documenting the entire process 📸

First step: protect the space and contain dust. Then we carefully removed all the loose plaster. Not smashing, controlled tapping to preserve the rocklath.

This one had a previous “repair” using DAP plaster… which came off with a putty knife. We removed it all and rebuilt the area the right way, new blueboard, bonding agent, and a proper plaster basecoat to keep everything flat and prevent cracking.

Once that set, we finished with lime and plaster of paris.

Day 2: skim coating the ceiling. After 60+ years of patches, it wasn’t doing the room any favors. Now it’s being brought back to a smooth, clean finish.

We also addressed plaster cracks the correct way, opened them up, bonded them, reinforced with mesh, and filled with real plaster. No shortcuts, no future callbacks.

Now everything dries before final prep and paint.

This is Part I, more to come.

Today we are repairing water damage to a plaster ceiling in a living room. We remove the damaged plaster and install new plaster. Plus painting

Large Vaulted Ceiling – Water Damage Repair & Repaint

A small roof leak turned into a full vaulted ceiling repaint to keep everything uniform.

We handled the repairs first (nail pops, cracks, staining), then prepped the entire space floor-to-ceiling before applying two full coats for a clean, consistent finish.

This one took 4 days and some serious setup to do it right.

There’s a lot more to this job than a quick post can show — including prep, repairs, and the equipment needed to reach these ceilings.

👉 Full breakdown + photos here:

Even though the water damage was minor, the insurance company approved repainting the entire vaulted ceiling to keep everything uniform.

We recently wrapped up a plaster bulge repair and full hallway repaint in Akron, NY. The wall had a large plaster bulge caused by broken plaster keys, which allowed the plaster to slowly slide down the wall and crack over time. Attempts had been made in the past to fix it with drywall compound, but bulging plaster can’t be repaired that way.

We carefully removed all the loose plaster by hand, exposed the original wood lath, applied a bonding agent, and reinforced the area with metal lath. The wall was then rebuilt using traditional plaster, finished in sections, and blended to match the surrounding surface, no flat drywall patches, and no shortcuts.

After the plaster fully dried, we primed the repair and finished the project with three coats of paint on the walls and two coats on the ceiling. The result is a solid, seamless repair that looks like the damage was never there.

Bulges are caused by the plaster keys breaking off, then gravity takes over. We show our process to repairing plaster bulges, with plaster for a seamless repair

Cracks in a plaster ceiling aren’t always cosmetic, sometimes they’re a warning. ⚠️

In 16 years of ceiling repair across Western New York, this one showed us things we’ve never seen before. This plaster ceiling collapse in Kenmore happened just days after visible cracking appeared. We’re documenting exactly what failed, why it failed, and how the room is being properly restored.

Prior to the ceiling collapsing large ominous cracks appeared running down the center of the ceiling. 6 days later the ceiling dropped.
