Last night (with a headlamp on, in the snow, around 6:30 pm) I finally finished spreading compost on the garden beds!! 🥳❄️🥶
This fall, I’ve been working to expand my growing area to accommodate more veggies & flowers. I started with shallow tillage while the lawn was still very dry and brown from the drought and easy to terminate. After that, I added leaves, manure, and compost on top of the beds to amend the soil & help keep the grass/weeds from regrowing. A couple weeks ago, I ordered a huge pile of compost to top dress the existing beds & cover the new beds with a 4” layer of compost. This layer acts as a mulch, helping to smother weeds and hold moisture in under the soil surface. As the leaves in the compost continue to decompose, they add organic matter and nitrogen to the soil. 🍂
The other very exciting news is that the garlic is all planted! I am also increasing my garlic production by over 2x for next year’s harvest. I had some help from Fred Thaxton last weekend to spread compost and plant all of my garlic. I literally couldn’t ask for better help than that!! ❤️ you Fred! 🧄
It’s been a lovely fall making plans for next season, expanding my farm bit by bit, planting new perennials & shrubs, and putting things to bed for the winter. I’m looking forward to the change of gears that winter brings and a time to reflect on the past year. 🍁
Last but not least, I have one last farmers market for the year, y’all! Saturday November 29, on Small Business Saturday, House Three Thirty is having their Small Business Market again! It was an incredible market last year, packed with small local businesses and a thriving community showing up & showing their support. I will be there with a selection of winter veggies, wreaths, bouquets, & garlands fresh from the farm. I’ll also be offering the first run of The Kale Next Door tote bags & t-shirts, printed by yours truly!! The market is from 11am-3:30 pm, can’t wait to see you there 💫
