It’s been a busy couple weeks here at the farm! The seedlings and I have been basking in & taking full advantage of the sunshine. ☀️

The onions, kale, bok choi, chard, collards, Brussels sprouts, & cabbage are in the ground!! I’ve got some flowers, radishes, peas, carrots, & beets popping up after all the rain as well. 🌱

I did a test with my first plantings of bok Choi, as I planted them a few days before we have 2 nights in the mid 20’s. I double covered them with frost fabric, and they were planted into a fresh top-dressing of compost. After the 2 cold nights had passed, I checked on them to see that they were just fine!! Aside from the tiniest bit of damage on some leaves, they survived. I enjoy running experiments like this, particularly when they work out 😅

A little mid-March seedling check in for anyone following along this season! 🌱

I’m happy to report that almost all the seedlings have had some time outside already, even spending a night or two outside! 🌖

I’m a firm proponent of hardening your seedlings off ASAP, fully taking advantage of any good weather moments. I think so much of farming is trying to internalize your goals, and then being opportunistic about timing to the best of your ability (including waking up at 6 am when you hear the storm starting to bring everyone inside!) 🌦️

Things are off to a great start at the farm already. I’ll share updates from the outside beds soon! 🫶

Over the past week a lot has happened indoors at the farm! Those soil blocks from last week have already become the homes of tiny little seedlings. 🌱

This coming week I’ll be making LOTS more soil blocks to house tomatoes & several other crops. Things are really starting to get rolling now! 🍅

Also, the first KALE of the year has sprouted!! 🥬🙌

Follow along with me while I try my new soil blocker tool from 🌱

Over the past week, I’ve been sowing the first of my flower and veggie seeds indoors using this new tool. I am attempting to start moving away from using plastic cell packs as much as I can, and this tool has been on my mental list to try for a few years now. It does take longer to prep the blocks vs filling plastic flats, but I am hopeful that the extra time spen in the beginning will lead to better results in the long run. 🌿

I am excited for the beginning of this growing season! I have been a bit under the weather these past few days, and starting seeds indoors has felt like just about the right speed for me while I recoup. Thanks for following along! 🫶

If you know me, you probably know that lavender is one of my most favorite flavors & scents. This love of lavender was what initially prompted me to grow it for myself, and now it’s something I offer seasonally from the farm! 💜

I made this lavender simple syrup today using a dried lavender bunch from this past fall. It is so nice to have on hand at home for lavender lattes, to make fancy mocktails, for baking, or just mix a spoonful into water over ice-it’s incredible! It doesn’t take long to make, and it stores great in the fridge. Make sure to grab some fresh lavender this coming growing season so you can try it for yourself! 🪻

📢 Big announcement!! Over the past month, while the farm is tucked in under a layer of snow, I’ve been hard at work inside building an official website for the farm! ☀️

My plan is to use this platform to help streamline things like CSA information & signups, online ordering, finding my market dates, and an easy way to sign up for my email list newsletter (launching very soon!) 💌

The about page tells both an abridged version and a long version of my farming story, with lots of pictures (love a story with pictures) ✨

Please check it out & let me know what you think! I will post updates as the pages become updated with current information for this coming year. Thanks friends! 💚

The website link is in my bio, and typed out below 👇

Hello friends! I have been a busy bee these past few weeks between working at Leaf again for the winter and getting myself prepped for the Small Business Market that’s happening TOMORROW at House Three Thirty! 🎁

If you preordered a Kale Next Door tote bag, pickup for those is tomorrow at the market! We’ll be there from 11am-3:30pm. Come snag your tote bag and check out the other offerings, including from the other incredible small businesses! 🛍️

In addition to tote bags, I also have a selection of hand-printed The Kale Next Door t-shirts and sweatshirts! All shirts are thrifted & totally unique. I have a variety of sizes to choose from, while supplies last. Check out the videos in the slides for a look at my printing process! Gotta love a wooden spoon and elbow grease to get the job done 💪

Also coming to the market tomorrow are freshly dug carrots and red beets, and fresh thyme! The winter vegetables are so special and such a staple for me at home. I’m excited to share them with you all! 🥕

Last but not lease, I have also made an assortment of fresh evergreen wreaths using primarily foraged greens from my farm and a friend’s huge arborvitae (& with magnolia from !) there are a variety of evergreen wreaths to choose from, and they can be hung outside all winter long! I usually leave mine up into the spring, as a celebration of the entire winter season. I also have several dried flower & foliage wreaths to choose from, along with dried bouquets. These do very well indoors or hung in between a screen door and wooden door. 🚪

I’m excited to see you all & connect with the Akron community on this beautiful celebration of small local businesses. It’s been so sweet to see posts encouraging folks to support local businesses this holiday season. It truly does mean the WORLD to us, and we appreciate every single transaction & interaction. This market is a great way to get acquainted with local entrepreneurs, makers, bakers & growers that are wonderful resources in the community. 🤝

Last night (with a headlamp on, in the snow, around 6:30 pm) I finally finished spreading compost on the garden beds!! 🥳❄️🥶

This fall, I’ve been working to expand my growing area to accommodate more veggies & flowers. I started with shallow tillage while the lawn was still very dry and brown from the drought and easy to terminate. After that, I added leaves, manure, and compost on top of the beds to amend the soil & help keep the grass/weeds from regrowing. A couple weeks ago, I ordered a huge pile of compost to top dress the existing beds & cover the new beds with a 4” layer of compost. This layer acts as a mulch, helping to smother weeds and hold moisture in under the soil surface. As the leaves in the compost continue to decompose, they add organic matter and nitrogen to the soil. 🍂

The other very exciting news is that the garlic is all planted! I am also increasing my garlic production by over 2x for next year’s harvest. I had some help from Fred Thaxton last weekend to spread compost and plant all of my garlic. I literally couldn’t ask for better help than that!! ❤️ you Fred! 🧄

It’s been a lovely fall making plans for next season, expanding my farm bit by bit, planting new perennials & shrubs, and putting things to bed for the winter. I’m looking forward to the change of gears that winter brings and a time to reflect on the past year. 🍁

Last but not least, I have one last farmers market for the year, y’all! Saturday November 29, on Small Business Saturday, House Three Thirty is having their Small Business Market again! It was an incredible market last year, packed with small local businesses and a thriving community showing up & showing their support. I will be there with a selection of winter veggies, wreaths, bouquets, & garlands fresh from the farm. I’ll also be offering the first run of The Kale Next Door tote bags & t-shirts, printed by yours truly!! The market is from 11am-3:30 pm, can’t wait to see you there 💫
