I don’t see these very often in Ohio but I have come across two this month. The good looking ones are being intensively managed to prevent/control blight.

The point is, people often want to add something ā€˜unique’ to their gardens. Truth: if not many people have it there is likely a good reason why. Don’t fall into that trap as you are expanding your gardens this spring.

Contorted filbert is an ornamental cultivar of European Filbert, (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'), grown for its twisted, gnarly stems. The plant is also sold under the name Harry Lauder's Walking Stick. While it’s unique architecture can be impressive, it’s highly susceptible to a fungal canker th...

Doesn’t matter - I’m still looking at trees

In this photo: walking down a shared driveway to identify trees that may fail within the next year. Mostly found Ash and Black Cherry that had issues.

🪨 Why Rock Mulch Can Be Harmful to Trees 🌳

The difference in these photos is more than cosmetic.

Rock mulch may look low-maintenance, but over time it can create stressful conditions for trees — especially around the root flare, where the trunk transitions into roots.

Here’s why organic mulch is usually the better choice:

• Rocks absorb and radiate heat, increasing soil temperatures and drying out roots
• Compacted stone layers can reduce oxygen exchange in the soil
• Rock mulch does not improve soil biology or organic matter as it breaks down
• Heat and moisture stress around the trunk can contribute to decline over time
• Organic mulch helps regulate temperature, retain moisture, and support healthier soil conditions

In the ā€œafterā€ photo, the rock was pulled back and replaced with a properly applied layer of organic mulch, keeping the root flare visible and reducing stress around the base of the tree.

A few mulch reminders:
āœ” Keep mulch 2–3 inches deep
āœ” Avoid piling mulch against the trunk (ā€œmulch volcanoesā€)
āœ” Leave the root flare exposed

Good tree care starts below the canopy. Healthy roots support healthy trees. 🌱
