Late freeze coming? Here's how to protect your newly planted trees before it hits.

Frost Cloth. Frost cloth is one of the best ways to shield young trees and their new leaves from freezing temperatures. It's a commercially woven fabric that lets in enough airflow and sunlight while blocking the cold. Just make sure you're using frost cloth actually designed for plants — other materials can do more harm than good.

Know your timing. Fertilize established trees in early spring (March–May) and again when summer rains start (June–July), but not until the tree is at least 2 years old.
