So what do you do when you can’t find where the clog in the main drain pipe is and there are no clean outs? Well, naturally, you start cutting up the pipe! Of course it’s 100 year old cast iron pipe, located in a very creepy crawl space that I had to slither my way into. I was worried the clog was at the 4” tee where all the silver galvanized drain pipe come together because that could have required a complete rebuild. Galvanized drain pipe will corrode from the inside out, slowly shrinking the diameter of the pipe as time goes by. Luckily, these pipes were all clear! I ran an inspection camera up into them after I removed that small section shown in the pictures. All clear up at the upper area, so I installed a section of PVC pipe with the rubber couplers and scurried outta there.
The clog had to be further down in the line, so I whipped out the sawzall and out came a 90 degree bend,(flashlight in picture). Down this pipe is where the clog was. I installed a clean out here to minimize a future clog hunters labor. I’m pointing to the new clean out in one of the pictures and off to the lower right is where the main drain U trap is. It’s about 8’ of pipe that runs under the concrete, almost in the middle of the house. I’d love to her what you guys think was clogging this pipe, comment below…
