Equipment update on the R-410A phase-down.

We are starting the transition to R-454B unitary systems this month. (I.e. your typical forced air ducted systems). Depending on supplier availability, installations are going to be a mixed bag of both refrigerant platforms.

The ductless transition to R-32 will come later.
Supplier stocks have not even began to switch over yet. Mini-split quotes will continue to be specified as 410A.

I have seen many posts from HVAC companies lately regarding the refrigerant change from R-410a. These range from informational to downright scare tactics. I'm here to offer a little insight from what I do know.

Yes, new systems designed for R-410a can no longer be manufactured starting January 1, 2025. However, a period of 1 year has been allocated to allow manufacturers, distributors, and contractors to sell their existing stock.

Parts will continue to be available for a minimum of 10 years afterwards to fulfill warranty claims, although the target is 20 years.

The EPA graph I viewed has R-410a being phased out to a 15% baseline level in 2037. This is similar to what we saw with R-22.

The market will undoubtedly be flooded with "drop-in" replacements as supplies dwindle.

So what IS replacing 410?
Two leading replacements have emerged:
R-32 and R-454b. Each are classified as A2L refrigerants (mildly flammable).

To my knowledge, most unitary manufacturers have chosen 454b, with the exception of Daikin. Don't quote me on that, I haven't had time to do the actual research. Ostensibly, R-32 is the new mini-split refrigerant. It IS already in our installation manuals (they have switched to this in Europe already).

The thing that WILL affect homeowners most is the increased cost. Factors being development costs and the requirement of flammable refrigerant leakage detectors and controls to shut a system down.
There are also rumored new requirements regarding our test equipment.

In short, there is no cause for alarm. We are perfectly able to service existing systems (albeit 22 or 410) and we will, provided it is financially practical to do so.

Just a heads up in advance, though. In the near future, new A2L systems are going to see an increased cost.

Thanks,
Kyle Rawles

Hey everyone! I apologize for my lack of engagement on our page this spring. We have been so busy this year, even in mild weather!

With summer officially around the corner, I usually post basic HVAC maintenance tips. I will share that link later, but this summer I would like to focus on something that may hit a little bit closer to home.

If you have an R-22 air conditioning or heat pump system like I do, there are a few options on the table in regards to a refrigerant issue. (After eliminating any potential airflow problems, of course. For example, plugged filter, dirty evap coil, substandard ductwork, etc):

1) If your system is slightly low on refrigerant, we do have limited supplies of R-22 on hand to top it off.

2) If your system is very low on refrigerant (indicating a major leak), we will, with your approval, pressurize the system with nitrogen and find it. We don't take the lazy way out and use contaminating UV dyes. We get down on our hands and knees, or up on a ladder and look for it with soap, isolating components if necessary. If the leak is repairable, we will do so by brazing it, pressure testing the whole system again, evacuating, and charging it with a much cheaper drop-in replacement refrigerant.

3) If a refrigerant leak is not repairable, or we find a bad mechanical part that is not available or not economical to replace, only then will we recommend replacement.

I will not recommend anything to a customer that I wouldn't do in my own house. That's just being honest. I won't get rich, but I will certainly sleep good and cool at night.

Regards,
Kyle Rawles

I cannot speak for all local contractors and service companies in Noble County, I but I would like to offer the following public service announcement at least, on behalf of our humble family-owned company:

Recently a certain conglomerate based out of Indianapolis has bought out a number of HVAC businesses from Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas. They advertise "buy one, get one" specials, "free" service calls, and related gimmicks.

Don't be fooled. It's all rolled into the price. The price that contains more overhead than the small shops. You're paying for a fancy vinyl-wrapped van and the supervisor's Caddilac. In contrast, you're helping to keep my van on the road to help other people, and to keep my daughter clothed and fed.

I'm not asking you to go with our company. I'm simply asking that you do your due diligence and shop local first (our quotes have always been free!) There are a few honest ones still around.

Thanks and have a good night!

There are a few things that every household needs. Among them, a fire extinguisher, working smoke alarms, and a quality carbon monoxide detector. I stress this every year! Please, if you have a gas-fired appliance, invest in a plug-in CO detector. Even if your appliance is new, it's still man-made and can fail.

P.S. Please call a qualified service technician in the event of a failure (yes, even if it isn't our company!) Please don't call Grandpa Bob's second cousin Larry who knew a guy that saw one being installed in the 70's. DIY is great for drywall patches and click-lock flooring, but it has a pretty good chance of ending up like these photos when it comes to HVAC. Stay safe!

Good evening everyone! I hope you are doing well! Spring is almost here; but along with the warmer weather, I have to inform you of some industry-wide price increases. We are now experiencing what our friends in the construction industry have dealt with for some time regarding lumber. We have seen an unprecedented number of manufacturer price increases in the last month, some up to 25%. Lead times have also increased, however most are not drastic at this time.

Again, this is industry wide. Our future quotes will reflect this increase effective immediately. Terms will now be shortened to 15 days, with an exception clause for immediate manufacturer price increases out of our control.

Thank you. I hope I have better news soon!

P.S. Remember to change your filters, thermostat batteries, and keep your outdoor unit clean!

Air Conditioning season is finally here!! I would like to thank all our customers for their support this season! If you are trying to contact us through our office number, please leave a message if no one answers. Believe me, I would like to stay in the cool office all day, paint my nails, and trade some stocks, but I simply cannot work on equipment and answer the phone at the same time. 😉 much appreciated!!!

Per Indiana Governor Holcomb's recent executive order, HVAC businesses (and their suppliers) fall under the "Critical Trades" category and are exempt from travel restrictions during an emergency declaration.

If you find yourself without heat, please call our office number and select the emergency option.

Stay safe out there; let's hope life returns to normal soon!

I cannot stress this enough. Please invest in a good carbon monoxide detector, no matter the age or brand of your furnace! 23 years old or only 5, these appliances are man-made and can fail. Integrated safeguards can and have failed to stop operation in the event of a heat exchanger failure. It's a miracle no one was harmed this week!

Our company has been selling Frigidaire branded HVAC equipment for 25 years, but due to numerous warranty issues associated with Nortek moving manufacturing facilities to Mexico, we are forced to part ways and switch to a family owned company from Canada.

You may have heard of the name Napoleon. They have been manufacturing quality fireplaces and grills for over 40 years, so they hit the ground running with their entry into the HVAC market.

As a tech, I have installed around 30 Napoleon appliances in the last year as part of this transition period. How many callbacks have I had? One (due to an oversight of mine). I've lost count of the Nortek callbacks in a year.

We will continue to service and honor warranty on all Nortek brands. However, we are pleased to announce we will be selling Napoleon as our primary line. Just look at it! Not only is it the best thing I've ever installed, it's pretty sexy too.
