The best terraces are designed to make people stay.
1. Create a gathering point.
Every great terrace has a centre of gravity. A dining table, an outdoor sofa or a lounge area where people can comfortably face each other and talk.
Ask yourself: Where will people naturally spend the most time?
2. Add shade.
A terrace nobody can enjoy at 2 PM isn’t working hard enough. Pergolas, umbrellas, awnings or trees can completely change how often you use the space.
Ask yourself: Could I happily spend an entire summer afternoon here?
3. Focus on lighting.
Furniture gets attention during the day. Lighting creates the atmosphere after sunset. Portable lamps, candles and warm lighting make people stay for one more drink.
Ask yourself: How will this space feel at 10 PM?
4. Add textures.
Cushions, rugs and natural materials make an outdoor space feel like an extension of your home rather than just a terrace.
Ask yourself: Does it feel welcoming or simply decorated?
5. Design for sharing.
Leave room for one more guest. Add a side table for drinks. Create spaces that invite people to sit down and stay.
Ask yourself: Was this terrace designed to be admired or enjoyed?
How many of these do you already have?
