A Farewell to a Banner Year, Laced with a Touch of Lava

As we bid adieu to a year that's been nothing short of monumental, we at Baker A+D want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the incredible crew we've shared this journey with. From our clever engineers to our sage consultants, and most importantly, our phenomenal clients who entrust us with your projects; allowing us to explore our creative vision and bring new concepts to reality in this art form we call Architecture.

Speaking of grand achievements, earlier this year, we had the distinct honor of snagging the Harnar Award for Contemporary Architecture for the third time (talk about a hat trick!). This particular project was especially close to our hearts. Why? Because we brought a world-class, state-of-the-art facility to the under-served Navajo community on the southwest side of Gallup, New Mexico. Lincoln Elementary stands tall as our biggest and most intricate project to date.

But wait, there's more! To cap off an amazing year, we also snagged the top design award at the annual AIA Albuquerque shindig. Jury chair Bob Borson, FAIA, couldn't have said it better himself: "[Lavaland Elementary] took its inspiration from the geological history of the area – in this case the Three Sisters Volcanoes. Molten lava working its way through the earth's mantle, creating the foundation for the form of the building..." Designing Lavaland was a privilege, not just for its architectural significance, but for the role it'll play as a vibrant community hub in the westside neighborhood for years to come.

Sometimes we get the opportunity to work on a different scale. The Nosse Studio was a fun, private art space that really allowed us to play with design, iteration and visualization on a smaller scale. Being able to see something before it is built, in a true and realistic way, helps our clients to be better informed on design decisions, in real-time and as they happen. Our team at Baker is highly skilled in bringing projects to life both digitally and physically, rapid prototyping and design iteration, all before we ever put a shovel in the ground.

We are excited to introduce our latest project! The ECO High School (Early College Opportunities) is a journey into innovation and creativity. We transformed an existing concrete block shell of a building into something extraordinary.

We are honored to have won an AIA New Mexico award for Lavaland Elementary. It is a meaningful reward to bring a first class sustainable learning environment to the disadvantaged students of this Southwest Mesa neighborhood for generations to come.

We love the view from back here! This is the service entrance to our building at Lavaland Elementary School. This project features a 375 panel, 127.5 kW solar system that powers the school. We love the open views of the Sandias and our beautiful city!
