Hopping on the microgreen bandwagon 🌱

We've recent had started consuming microgreens on a almost daily basis. I figured that I already had everything to grow them including a surplus of broccoli seeds that I have saved over the years so here we are!

Sweet potato slips! First time growing them and we opted for the soil method over water.

Trying to grow 3 different varieties this year and you definitely save $$$ by growing your own slips.

My seed collection has been complete chaos for a while now. At the end of last gardening season I finally decided to do something about it.

I had a bunch of spare binders lying around and stole some card protectors from my hubby and voilà! All my seeds are easy managed into a beautiful catalog binders!

Peas are something I have always struggled with. I love snacking on fresh sugar snap peas from the garden, but had little luck with growing a pea variety that is good for preservation. Peas are not a particularly hard crop to grow. They have just been a series of unfortunately events for me.

The first time I grew them as starts and then transplanted them outdoors. They started out with great vigor, but once they hit the soil they seemed to be stunted and refused to grow.

The following year I directed sowed them into our raised beds and the plants did grow to a half way decent height, but were hardly productive. It may have been my fault for not keeping the soil regularly moist and/or the weather turning warm too quickly.

This year I am very much looking forward to growing the tall telephone variety on the arched trellises because of just how tall they have grow (up to 6ft) and know for its heavy productivity. Hopefully the weather will stay cool enough for peas to tolerate, yet I am I little wary with it already projected to be 80 degrees next Thursday.

Elderflowers doing their thing.

Our elderberry shrubs were one of the first things that we planted on our journey to living a more sustainable lifestyle.

Now 3 years later, our two plants have multipled to produced about 16 elderbabies and we are spreading them out to create our own little elderforest.

Once we've reached our capacity, we look forward to sharing future shoots with friends & family as well as neighbors to help encourage the spread of this wonderful native plant.

The 2022 harvest is officially hung to cure!

The harvest is less abundant that last year (75 heads down to 39) because my main focus was only saving the best sized garlic seed from the 2021 batch and it definitely paid off. The average sized bulb for the lot has increased from last year with a few bulbs breaking a personal record!

Did I also mention that I planted these babies about 2 months later than recommended? I got them in the ground on Dec 27th instead of Oct 31st and exactly 7 months later (totally not planned) pulled up this lot of winners on Jun 27th 🧄

Garlic haversted!

We have about 100 bulbs of garlic. Specific varieties are persian star and romanian red. We wanted to wait about another 2 weeks, but the outer layers were starting to mold (we've had alot of rain in the past 2 weeks ), so we decided harvest now versus risking further rot.

We shucked the layers that were going bad (some were even slimy 🤮), and luckily underneath was still perfectly fine. Because we live in such a humid area, we wanted to get rid of the mold before the drying process.

We did not think realize that garlic needed to be cured in a highly ventilated and without direct sunlight, so we've utilized our outdoor gazebo. It is the MOST ventilated you can get! To ensure the bulbs remained shaded, we've hung tarps on the east and west side to block out the sun during the morning and late evenings.

Can't wait to braid these bad boys!

Check out the roots on these babies!
