Wishing you the merriest this Christmas Day. While Truman may have been watching for Santa in yesterday’s post, Piper is showing off her new Christmas sweater in front of the tree for you all today.

The second photo is from our quick stop in Vienna for a little Christmas Market fun on the way home from Croatia. What a whirlwind the last 10 or so weeks have been.

We took Piper to in Old Town yesterday to help my parents shop for some furniture and Piper walked around discovering that every mirror held another dimension with a pug and a copy of me. 🤯 However, the whole endeavor was borderline torture as she was not allowed to immediately jump onto a single sofa, chair, or bed. THE WORST!

Let’s take a walk down memory lane and tell us which of our costumes is your favorite of our last 20 or so years of Halloween costumes!

Many years we did a couple’s costume. Some years a larger group. Some we even centered our costume on our pups. Some years we leaned into current pop culture trends while others were nostalgic. No matter what we had a little…or a lot of fun each year.

In just 5 weeks we corrected mistakes we made 20+ years ago and breathed new life into our row house’s entry hallway.

The harlequin pattern we painted way back in 2003 was a point of pride in DIY for years, but it had begun to look a bit dated and tired. Several years ago decided it was about time to refresh this hallway, so we naturally put the project off for about 3 more years just to make sure we were really ready.

So when we finally jumped into this project we needed to correct the cracked ceiling plaster we didn’t know how to fix 22 years ago, the failed caulk from not using Big Stretch way back when, a bunch of the cracks on the plaster wall where we failed to use fiberglass mesh, and little blemishes all over the place.

Once the room was in shape it was time to try our hands at a whole room of wallpaper. It. Was. Infuriating. At least to start. It got better the more we did and after about 5 evenings of effort we had ourselves a fully wallpapered room, and we’re so happy with the results.

A few new accessories and a couple old friends on the walls and we have ourselves a refreshed entry hallway to be proud of.

What do you think? Are you more a fan of the before or after? I like them both, but I’m very happy with the update.

Elizabeth right at home in the front parlour getting ready for spooky season.

We kicked off this year with a full re-renovation of that very front room. You see, we renovated it when we bought our house in 2003 (that’s 23 years ago y’all). Back then we didn’t really know what we were doing, but oh damn were we trying. We stripped all the trim of 10+ layers of paint, installed some crown, called it done for 2 decades.

As we learned more that room kept calling to me. I hadn’t fixed the cracks in the bumpy plaster wall, hadn’t installed shoe molding correctly, used the wrong caulk on the crown, used too small of a crown profile, the mantel was literally falling off the wall, the window leaked into the wall (turns out it was like that for 130+ years), what a mess. But we knew how to fix it now, so we did.

Now this is our view looking through our dining room and into the living room. Smooth walls, exposed brick, custom picture rail, secured mantel, restored window (ooohhh wavy glass), no more cracks on the ceiling or failed caulk, and properly installed shoe molding. Only took 23 years but we got it done. 😂

✨Vermont and Maine, you are quite spectacular✨ 🛥️ ⚓️ 🦞

As we close out August we are looking back on how fortunate we were to enjoy an incredible week with family and friends. A family wedding took us to Burlington, Vermont where we kicked off our adventure with many servings of maple , salvage yards, and the Ethan Allen Homestead.

From there we stopped through Stowe on the way to Maine, got to enjoy ’s lovely shop for some mudroom floor inspiration for our upcoming project.

Once in Maine we got to eat our weight in lobster, explore the midcoast, and even enjoyed some time on the water. Our friends showed us all around the Freeport and Brunswick area, and then continued our adventure all over Camden, Rockland, Rockport and beyond. While there we got to hang out with and and couldn’t help but fall in love with their corner of the world.

After seeing all of what Stephen and David have been doing with their place, finally getting a chance to see it in person, it did not disappoint. Glad we even got to see a little light renovation, errr, demolition 😄.

Also, thank you to Gemma, Holly, Georgia, and Casco for filling our puppy voids while away from Truman and Piper. 🐕

We were able to experience Maine in August through the guidance of locals, which in turn has me trying to think of ways we could perhaps adopt Maine as our own. We truly can’t thank our friends enough.

Special thanks to for the first photo of and me looking halfway decent at golden hour 😉.

Who doesn’t love a surprise project?

What you see is the after, before, and during of our Old Town Home’s backyard. Just 15’ wide and about 35’ long, it’s always had potential but our big tree’s roots discouraged our investment as we knew it would simply cause an issue.

We’ve known the big maple tree in our yard was beginning to fade. Fewer leaves, dropping branches, and recently, peeling bark with black beneath. We’d care for it, fertilized it, and hoped there were a few years left before we’d ultimately lose it. This summer, after dropping a significant limb earlier in the year, we sought the advice of several arborists. They all reported the same. Our 80-100 year old tree had simply reached the end of its life.

With 💔💔, rather than risk a situation where it caused significant damage, we opted to have this beautiful tree that helped us choose our home in 2003 taken out. What sprung from that decision was a whirlwind project that has spanned the last two months.

Atypical of our DIY tendency, we hired out major pieces of this project. Tree removal, stump grinding, new wall rendering, laying the flagstone, and planting the new trees were all handled by contractors. We still killed ourselves on various parts of the project, like splitting and removing the wood from the tree for firewood, salvaging the bricks, doing a fair amount of demo, planning and preparing all of the conduit and pipes for drip irrigation, and footers for an eventual pergola.

Though our yard may not be in its final form, we completed our efforts just in time for our Halloween party. There’s really nothing like a party to encourage you to get stuff done. We have a good amount of accessorizing to go, a pergola to build, a new round teak dining table and chairs to acquire, and some potted planting decisions to make, but we sure love how it’s turning out. Really, this has not been a bad way to spend the last few months.

And that last photo with , that’s the first photo we have of our backyard in early 2003.

Just out here trying to see the northern lights that aren’t coming while enjoying the best $9 Halloween decorations out there, swapping out normal landscape lights for purple LEDs. Still need to get Skelly out of his slumber and installed, but I sure do love our house in purple and the spooky attic light!

3 of my favorite people in this one photo 😍🥰😘

, Truman, and Piper all enjoying a little sun on our new deck in front of our stock tank pool with a photo taken through our tomato arch. 🍅🐶🐾🏊‍♀️🤌

I’ve been posting a lot in stories and neglecting the grid so you may not have seen what we’ve been up to. But several major efforts this summer have been installing and growing a giant tomato arch, setting up a stock tank pool, and building a deck to enjoy said pool.

This weekend we finished up the deck, placed the umbrella and furniture, and got to enjoy the end of summer weekend day while the dogs basked in the warmth.

We still have one major aspect of the pool & deck project we want to complete before the fall arrives, cutting a new large garden bed around the whole thing so we can get started with plantings. We’re going to extend the bed from our porch and continue the white flower garden to encompass the whole pool and deck area.

Was “install a giant stock tank pool and deck” on your summer bingo card back in May? I can tell it wasn’t on ours even a little bit. More details on that whole endeavor in future reels. Until then, please enjoy my favorite photo of the summer.
