The weather should be cooling down soon, and fall planting season is almost here! I stopped by The Fruit Stand in Wood River today and they’re just getting started with their fall flowers. I love shopping local whenever I can!

Stop by and check them out-and don’t forget, they have great produce too!

🍁 PLANT LADY TIP OF THE WEEK

DON’T RUSH THE MUMS!

I know everyone is ready for fall, but mums don’t love those 90° days any more than we do! Planting them too early during extreme heat means more watering, more stress on the plants and often a shorter bloom time.

Waiting for temperatures to cool down a little can give you healthier plants and prettier fall color that lasts longer. 🌼

☀️ AUGUST HEAT TIPS ☀️

This extreme heat has been hard on flower beds and planters. Here are a few things you can do now to help prepare them for fall:

• Water deeply in the early morning instead of lightly watering every day.
• Remove dead flowers and badly damaged annuals.
• Keep pulling weeds before they go to seed and create even more weeds next year.
• Avoid planting mums too early-they won’t last nearly as long in 90-degree heat.
• Hold off on fertilizing plants that are already stressed from the heat.
• Start deciding what needs to be cut back, divided or replaced once cooler weather arrives.

If your flower beds have gotten away from you this summer, don’t be embarrassed-it happens quickly in this kind of weather!

Now scheduling:
Fall weeding
Flower bed cleanups

Fall is right around the corner!

Now is the perfect time to schedule your flower bed weeding and fall cleanups and start planning your custom fall planters.

Whether your beds need a good cleanup or your porch needs a fresh fall look with mums, ornamental peppers, kale and other seasonal favorites, The Plant Lady can help!

🌼 Plant Lady Tip of the Week:
Don’t rush to buy and plant your mums while temperatures are still in the 90s. Extreme heat can stress them, dry them out quickly and shorten their bloom time. Waiting until the weather cools down will help your mums stay healthier and look beautiful longer!

Take a look at the pictures below of some custom planters along with a few recent flower bed cleanups.

🌼 A few tips about mums!

It’s almost mum season, so here are a few things I’ve learned over the years that can help keep them looking good longer.

When you’re picking out mums, don’t always grab the one that’s completely bloomed out. Look for one with lots of buds that are just starting to open. You’ll get a lot more time out of it.

💧 Keep an eye on the water. Mums get thirsty! Once they dry out, they can go downhill pretty quickly.

☀️ They like sun, but those really hot fall afternoons can be hard on them. A little protection from the hottest afternoon sun can help the blooms last longer.

✂️ Pick off the dead blooms as they fade. It keeps the plant looking better and makes room for all those buds underneath.

You definitely don’t have to use mums by themselves. They look great mixed with ornamental peppers, kale, grasses and other fall plants.

I’m currently scheduling custom fall planters, weeding and fall cleanups.
