Haven’t had a day off for a couple weeks so I’m running a little late in the garden, but at least the specialty superhots are doing well. I got 5 more transplanted yesterday finally. Ghost and habanero plants are already flowering.

High of 16 degrees, still snowing, and no snow plows in Amarillo, (at least not on the north side of town, lol). Definitely an inside day for the gardeners in the Texas panhandle. Good time to go through some seed catalogs and start planning that spring garden 🪴

Got a few more superhots transplanted yesterday from the first round of seedlings. They’re growing fast and strong. If you’d like to try growing some specialty superhots, I have 4 seedlings that are ready for a new forever home, 2 ghost pepper, 1 death spiral pepper and 1 red habanero. Free if you want ‘em 🔥 (2nd round of seedlings will be ready soon)

Got my first of 11 seed catalogs in the mail. Who else gets as excited as I do to look through these every winter? I will definitely be growing some of those Chocolate Cherry Sunflowers pictured on the cover this year, 😊

Tis the season to start specialty super hot peppers. 5 each of the Carolina Reaper, Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper), Death Spiral and Caribbean Red Habanero. Already got 2 Ghost peppers sprouting and 3 Habanero. I will also be starting some Peruvian Aji Charapita and Chocolate Habanero this week. Expecting some heat this coming year.

The sunflowers are getting so tall we’re almost eye to eye, lol. The sweet corn is waist high trying to keep up, lol. They were planted at the same time, about 2 weeks before last frost. The popcorn, in the blue tub on the other side of the yard, was planted 2 weeks after last frost.

We are growing 2 types of broccoli this year. Waltham, which forms the traditional single large heads and an Italian Rapini, which forms many smaller shoots instead. My Waltham heads are still growing but I have harvested the Rapini multiple times already this season before I let them go to flower. Every last part of the plants are edible but they can be a little bit bitter after they have bolted.

Howdy friends. My name is Eddie and this is our garden. 95% of what we grow are heirloom varieties and we are committed to 100% organic growing methods. My wife and I have had a vegetable and herb garden for most of our 10 years together here in Amarillo, TX, zone 7a. She went home to be with the Lord in April of 2020 but we have passed through the long, cold winter of the heart and have entered into the 2021 garden season running. Though there are some exceptions, a big portion of the garden is committed to salsa herbs and vegetables because, well, homemade salsa with garden fresh ingredients is hard to beat, lol. Maybe one day soon we can offer garden fresh salsa for sale in a multitude of varieties and flavors. I hope you enjoy taking a tour through the growing season from our little corner of paradise. May the Lord keep and bless you, your family and your precious garden according to His riches and glorious good will.
