I'll be setting up grow lights and planting these, indoors, today and tomorrow. We are currently 9 weeks until our est last frost date, April 22. I'll have my new growing set up in the laundry area and hoping it will be warm enough to germinate my peppers. By the time I'll need to repot, they will all be moving to the greenhouse and garden. 😍🌱 I'm trying to only set what I will personally grow, but knowing how I am, I'm sure I'll over do it. πŸ˜†

Beautiful orchid that my husband got me for Valentine's Day! 😍 He searched the shops, looking for something unique. Although I love roses, he likes to find things that are unlike the other. I don't know much about the care of these beauts, but I'm happy to to try!

August 2022... These were the only flowers I harvested last year, Chocolate Cherry Sunflowers by Baker Creek. I gave up on the garden after that. You see, I didn't plan on giving up. We had made many raised beds in my new front garden and had yards and yards of fresh dirt delivered. We composted and prepped each bed. My whole family worked so very hard to get it all set up and planted after the last frost. I even started my own seeds in my new greenhouse and they grew so well and healthy. That garden season was supposed to go so differently... June comes along and the garden is starting to come alive and we celebrated my Daddy's 60th birthday. I remember telling him all about the new adventures of the garden for the year, eager to share it with him. He told me how proud he was and how he couldn't wait to see what I'd grow. Then he got sick... terribly sick... I spent weeks with him while he was in the hospital and just praying for a cure, just praying that he'd be able to go home soon. I was shook to my core... I couldn't manage my garden due to such deep sorrow, but these lovely sunflowers still bloomed. So I picked them, the only things that grew with my neglect, and made into a bouquet for my sweet Daddy just days before he passed. We delivered them with a homemade apple pie that my 13 y/o daughter made 100% by scratch. My daddy was my world. He was my biggest encourager and he loved me deeply... So this year I will grow my garden within his memory. I will grow because he told me how proud he was of my "little farm". LouLou Valley Homestead has and will be everything that he thought it could be. πŸŒ»πŸƒ

Betty Blue πŸŒ±πŸ’™πŸŒ± This is my lovely Betty Blue, she is a pop-up camper converted into my little greenhouse. I used the shelving from our previous little greenhouse set ups that were purchased at TSC, those little green tented ones. We wrapped it with the clear corrugated panels, but I would highly suggest using a more sturdy polycarbonate or plexiglass material. Unfortunately, between our nasty winds and dry heat, these panels just don't fare well. When the crazy hail storm hit us last year, they didn't stand a chance and were shredded! Other than that, it has been so wonderful and I sure love having her. I plan to set up a small heater this year, as it does get a bit too cold at night. I will start my seeds indoors and will transfer them to Betty Blue after they establish their first set of true leaves.

As well as starting seeds, it's time to load the incubator here on the homestead. 🐣πŸ₯ I'll be using my own backyard mix to load at the moment. I'll be sure to post a picture of my flock and colored eggs soon! I'm hoping for more pullets than cockerels this yearπŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« I currently have 30 laying hens in with 3 roosters, I have a small/bantam pen with a few hens and roosters, 4 chocolate turkey and a bachelor pen of about 15 roos. I am currently working on our butcher area and would love to expand my turkey pen to make room for a Tom. Maybe one day I'll be able to set up chicken breeding pens, but for now, I'm very happy with what we have. πŸ’›

It's about that time to start seeds! πŸ…πŸ₯¦πŸ«‘πŸ₯¬πŸŒΆ I'll be starting all my peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce greens and herbs. I've not tried to grow much cold weather crop, due to our hot Springs, so I'll start them indoors with hopes to set them out in the garden mid March. As for my peppers, I would like to get them started now, knowing that they take quite a while to become established. I've always had good luck with my tomato starts and am excited to see the garden alive again! I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt! 🌱

2015... That was the year I fell in love with this land. 2015 was when our whole family decided to uproot from our lives, in town, and move out to the skirts! A bit of background... My husband was a carpenter and I was working in the medical field. During our relationship, we needed a change, and we knew it was going to be BIG. That life wasn't fitting for us any longer. So, my husband took to mechanics and I stayed home to raise the kids. It was a shock to get used to, but we managed to overcome it and push through. As we were gaining our confidence with our new careers/responsibilities, we couldn't help but feel trapped. We were looking for something else, we just couldn't put our fingers on it... Then one day, we went to visit my FIL's property to help move a few things around. He has owned this land for over 30 years. It was acres of untamed land with an occupied home. While visiting, a massive rain storm blew through and I couldn't help but fall completely in love with it... BOOM! This was it, this was our next big move. With my FIL's blessing, we were allowed to come out and start a new life. We began with just a camper, fitting 3 young children, my spouse and I. Since then, life has given us many opportunities to learn what it means to be self sufficient, bold and brave. Through blood, sweat and tears, we've been able to create this place we call HOME.

Good evening! Today is the day that I am debuting my new page LouLou Valley Homestead . Here is where I will share all about my past, present and future in homesteading. This page is made in memory of my father and grandparents. They have always been supportive and encouraging when it comes to this lifestyle here on my "little farm". I am Katie and I've been homesteading since 2015. Although it has been tough, it sure has been rewarding along the way. I lost my grandfather in 2018, my grandmother in 2020, and the worst was loosing my father, last year, 2022. They would always tell me how proud they were of me, how much they loved me, and told me to never give up! Thank you for your read and I look forward to sharing with you all!
