Yarducopia

Yarducopia Yarducopia is a program of Alaska Community Action on Toxics supporting organic growers in Anchorage Its about time this concept came to Anchorage!

Yarducopia is a program designed to increase outreach, train organic gardeners, utilize Anchorage land responsibly, and provide local organic produce via a network of home gardens. Our model is loosely based on the model of Neighborhood Supported Agriculture (NSA). NSAs are networks of neighborhood gardens that are supported by members who either volunteer their land to be organically cultivated o

r time to maintain the gardens. As the gardens produce organic food locally, the members share the harvest. Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) is a local non-profit that advocates for environmental and community health. In the upcoming 2013 gardening season ACAT is launching a new pilot NSA designed to increase outreach, train organic gardeners, utilize Anchorage land responsibly, and provide local organic produce. For this program, landowners donate a 10' x 10' plot of their yard, provide water, purchase seeds and starts and in return they receive a portion of produce grown on their land and a beautiful garden. The gardens are maintained by ACAT trained volunteers. The volunteers receive a portion of the produce and learn organic gardening skills. Ten percent of the produce grown would be given to the local food bank in keeping with ACAT's mission- providing toxic free food to everyone one.

Alaska just took a major step forward on plastic pollution.

House Bill 25, sponsored by Representative Andy Josephson, has officially passed the Alaska Legislature to reduce polystyrene foam and microplastics across the state.

This new law will phase out polystyrene (“Styrofoam”) food service containers, a material that does not break down, cannot be recycled, and contributes to microplastics found in our waterways, fish, and wildlife. It is also linked to serious health harms, including cancer and damage to the nervous system.

This progress reflects strong, bipartisan leadership and the voices of communities across Alaska calling for change.

The bill now heads to the governor’s desk and, if signed, will take effect in January 2027.

🚨 ACTION ALERT: HB 25 VOTE TODAY 🚨

The full Alaska State Senate is voting today on House Bill 25, a bill to phase out toxic polystyrene (Styrofoam) in takeout containers.

We are so close to getting this across the finish line, and your voice could make the difference.

Polystyrene does not biodegrade. It breaks into microplastics that contaminate our waters, fish, wildlife, and ultimately our bodies. This bill is a critical step toward protecting Alaska’s health, food systems, and environment, and safer alternatives already exist.

✔️ Passed the House with bipartisan support
✔️ Backed by businesses and communities statewide
✔️ A real solution to reduce plastic pollution

Shout out to Dylan Jones, ACAT's Community Science Coordinator who has been helping design and facilitate a community science research project. ACAT will be collecting small plastic pellets AKA 'nurdles'.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Have you seen NURDLES in your community?

Nurdles are round plastic pellets. They are a bit smaller than your pinky fingernail. These plastic pellets are the raw material used to make all plastic products. Plastic products from water bottles to car bumpers are made from nurdles.

Nurdles can spill into the environment during shipping and manufacturing. Nurdles that reach the ocean travel vast distances in currents. Eventually they wash up on shorelines. Many animals including seabirds, fish, and turtles mistake nurdles for food. Ingested nurdles can release harmful chemicals and pollutants into the animal’s body.

Some nurdles have been found in Southeastern Alaska. But there has not been a large-scale search for nurdles on Alaska beaches.

ACAT (Alaska Community Action on Toxics) is conducting microplastics sampling with interested community members. If you have noticed nurdles on local beaches, please leave a comment and take the short survey if you’re interested in helping search for nurdles.
