Alaska just took a major step forward on plastic pollution.
House Bill 25, sponsored by Representative Andy Josephson, has officially passed the Alaska Legislature to reduce polystyrene foam and microplastics across the state.
This new law will phase out polystyrene (“Styrofoam”) food service containers, a material that does not break down, cannot be recycled, and contributes to microplastics found in our waterways, fish, and wildlife. It is also linked to serious health harms, including cancer and damage to the nervous system.
This progress reflects strong, bipartisan leadership and the voices of communities across Alaska calling for change.
The bill now heads to the governor’s desk and, if signed, will take effect in January 2027.
