Happy ! Be on the lookout for turtles crossing the road and remember to "give turtles a brake." Thousands of turtles are killed each year in New York when struck by vehicles while migrating to nesting areas.

If you see a turtle in the road:

🐢 If you can SAFELY stop, PARK ENTIRELY OFF THE ROAD.

🐢 Do NOT pick turtles up by their tails. Most turtles can be picked up safely by the sides of their shells. (See snapping turtle info below)

🐢 Move the turtle off the road in the direction it was already heading.

🐢 Carry on living your life.

What if it's a snapping turtle:

🐢 Snapping turtles have a strong bite and necks that reach far back.

🐢 Pick them up by the rear shell near the tail or slide a car mat under to drag safely across the road.

🐢 Do not drag the turtle by the tail. Doing so can dislocate the tail bones.

All New York native reptiles and amphibians, including native turtles are protected by New York state law. Leave turtles in the wild, do not take them home as pets.

It's that time of year. Turtles will be crossing the roads to lay eggs. Please follow these rules if you find yourself needing to help one of these awesome creatures cross safely: 1, be sure to move it in the direction it was going; 2, Do Not pick it up by the tail(this may harm them); 3, pick it up by the shell at least 3/4s back(they can reach you if you get too close to front of shell) or if you have gloves to protect your hands, you can grasp the back legs(careful as nails are sharp). Thank you. We are their keepers, especially if we interject our selves in to their existence.

Tomorrow, September 25th, is ! It's also a Free Fishing Day in NY! The requirement for a fishing license is waived on free fishing days, but all other fishing regulations still apply.
