The techniques used to install the original oil tank may contribute to its failure. If it was set in beds of ashes or cinders (not uncommon, as they were readily available as stabilizing backfill), the acidity level will be too high and it is likely the tank is corroded.

If you are considering buying a home with furnace fueled by heating oil in an underground tank, then it's recommended that you have the tank removed.

Corrosion of the interior of an oil tank is usually the result of water reacting with the sulfur in the heating oil. This is a corrosive combination and it attacks the metal lining of the tank, perforating it. The more water that testing reveals, the greater the likelihood the tank will need replacing.

In the oil tank removal process, the first step will involve removing any remaining oil that happens to be in the tank. Once this happens, the tank is unearthed and the interior is wiped down to remove all traces of oil and look for any evidence of leakage in the tank.

Did you know that the common life expectancy of buried oil tanks is between 10 and 15 years? However, people often try to extend the lives of their oil tanks much longer, which can result in corrosion and soil contamination.

Although we'd like to be able to tell every homeowner that the removal of their oil tank will be a quick process, we can't do that until we know its exact location. If you aren't sure where it is on your property, we'll have to locate it before we can give you a better estimate of its removal time.

If you live in an older home in the Northeast, check for signs of an unused underground oil tank and have it removed. More than 80% of the homes use heating oil today, and it was the most common heat source in homes built before the 1950s.

Part of the oil tank removal process involves determining whether the tank has had any leaks. Not only will the interior of the tank be wiped down and inspected for evidence of leaks, but soil samples will be taken from below where the tank was situated to further determine if the tank leaked.

There are several approaches to removing an oil tank from a property, depending on where exactly the tank is located. In most cases, backhoe removal will be the best option, but the tank's location can necessitate manual digging as well.

If you live in an area that doesn't have natural gas pipelines, fuel oil is the most efficient choice for heating a home. The development of double-walled tanks makes this safer than ever. These tanks are double-walled, with a polyethylene (rust-proof) shell inside a galvanized steel outer shell.

It's important to remember that the oil tank you don't remove from your property today could be an issue waiting to happen in the future. When you're ready to tackle the removal of the oil tank on your property, we're here for you.

If it was common for oil tanks to be used in the area where you are buying a house or other building, have the property checked for an abandoned oil tank. If there is one, it will need to be removed.
