Tips to Prepare for Freezing Temperatures

Well water typically emerges from the ground at an average temperature of 68–72°F. Water that is steadily moving at this temperature will not freeze.

We recommend that the afternoon before a freeze you take the following precautions:

* Turn on all exterior water outlets to a steady drizzle.
* Turn on all interior faucets to a steady drip of both hot and cold water.
* Open bathroom and kitchen cabinets that contain plumbing, as well as the dishwasher, to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

---

Submersible Pump Systems

Although the pump itself is located deep within the well, any above-ground casing, exposed piping, and pressure tank must be properly protected from freezing.

* Insulate and cover all exposed piping using pipe insulation or by double-wrapping with towels or old sweatshirts and securing with tape.
* Wrap the pressure tank using insulation, large sleeping bags, quilts, or similar materials, and secure them in place.
* If the well and tank are housed in a pump house, a securely installed 100-watt light can be used to provide supplemental warmth.

---

Jet Pump Systems

Jet pumps require additional precautions due to their exposure:

* Cover the pump with a trash can, then insulate the outside of the trash can.
* Place a second, larger trash can over the first for added protection.
* Insulate and cover all exposed piping and the pressure tank using pipe insulation or towels/sweatshirts secured with tape.
* Do not place insulation, blankets, or other materials directly on the jet pump, as this can create a fire hazard.
* If the well and tank are located in a pump house, a securely installed 100-watt light can help maintain a safe temperature.

---

Important Safety Notice

If your well is already frozen or if water stops flowing for any reason, turn off power to the pump immediately. Continuing to run the pump without water flow can cause catastrophic damage, including overheating and melting of the casing, which may result in complete well failure.

Tips to Prepare for a Freeze!

Well water comes out of the ground at an average of 68-72°. Water steadily moving at a temperature of 68-72° will not freeze.
We suggest that the afternoon before a freeze turn on all exterior water outlets to a steady drizzle. Turn on all interior faucets to a steady drip of both hot and cold water. Open bathroom and kitchen cabinets with pipes and the dishwasher to allow heat inside.

Submersible Pump
Your pump is actually deep down inside your well, however, all the casing and piping above the ground and the tank that are exposed should be insulated and covered. You can purchase insulation or use towels or old sweatshirts to double wrap and tape pipes. Use insulation, large sleeping bags, quilts or comparable material and secure around the tank. If your well and tank are in a pump house, you can securely install a 100 watt light to the house to keep it warm.

Jet Pump
Cover the pump with a trash can, secure insulation on the outside of the trash can, then put a larger trash can over that. Insulate and cover all exposed piping and the tank. You can purchase insulation or use towels or old sweatshirts to double wrap and tape pipes. Use insulation, large sleeping bags, quilts or comparable material and secure around the tank. Never put insulation, blankets etc. directly on your jet pump as it could be a fire hazard. If your well and tank are in a pump house, you can securely install a 100 watt light to the house to keep it warm.

If you lose power for any reason IMMEDIATELY turn off the breaker for the well. Doing so will help avoid any issues that may arise should power be restored unexpectedly.

If you are dealing with a frozen well already or your water stops flowing for any reason, turn off the power to the pump immediately to prevent catastrophic failure, i.e. overheating and melting the casing which will destroy your water well.

Please call us or visit our website if you have any questions!

It is with a heavy heart we share that Raymond Felder passed earlier this week. We appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. The office will be closed Monday, February 19th to allow the FWW family to attend his Life Celebration.

Raymond Dean Felder, 82, of Angleton, Texas passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas, on February 13, 2024, with loved ones by his side. He was born on January 29, 1942, to Daniel Clarence and Alice Cornelia (Van Brook) Felder in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Angleton High School in 1960 and went on to study at Southwest Business College in Houston. He married Vera Elizabeth Reagan in 1961, and they made their home and raised their three children in Angleton for 31 years.

Raymond was employed at Pfeiffer Electric and Dow Chemical and eventually obtained his master electrician license (IBEW 716) while drilling and servicing water wells on the weekends with his father. He obtained his master water well driller and pump installer’s license and took over the reins of the water well business around 1973. Over the years, Raymond was involved with and served on various boards and was a past president of the Texas Groundwater Association. He served on the board as chairman of the Angleton Drainage District for over 10 years. He also served on the board of the Brazoria County Groundwater Conservation District for many years. Beyond the water well industry, Raymond was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #829. He also enjoyed dabbling in real estate. He was one of the original developers of the Heritage Oaks neighborhood in Angleton and engaged in various other real estate projects. He always enjoyed spending time at his in-laws' cattle ranch, working with his father-in-law, brother-in-law, and family.
Raymond was always a big presence wherever he went, but he mostly enjoyed spending time with family and friends and engaging in one of the many projects he always had in the works. Many family trips were taken to the Comal River to spend time with his lifelong dear friends, George and Charlotte Drury. Many more memories were made camping along the Frio River, Big Bend, New Mexico, Arkansas, and Surfside Beach, along with a midlife love for snow skiing with family and friends.

Raymond married Glenda Kilpatrick on May 18, 2002, and together they traveled to Colorado and Montana and eventually built a second home along the Kootenai River near Libby, Montana. They spent their summers making many new friends and enjoyed experiencing a whole new way of life away from the Texas heat.
RD is preceded in death by his cherished wife Glenda, his father and stepmother, Daniel Clarence and Ida Belle Felder, his mother, Alice, sister Mary Leatha Felder, and stepbrothers, Leonard (Bud) David and Richard (Pete) David.

RD is survived by his beloved companion Nell Wagner, sons Dale (Julie) Felder and Tim (Sherrie) Felder and daughter Jonell (Randall) Wilcox, sister Rhydonia (Doug) Stowers, grandchildren, Lauren (Carlos) Sonka, Kristin Felder, Kyle (Lauryn) Felder, Hayley Wilcox, Sarah Felder (Caylob Adams), Travis Felder, Ryan Wilcox, Sarah (Stephen) Ricks, great-grandchildren, Gianna and Iris Sonka, Grace Adams, Brooke, Chase, Colton, Faith, and Clayton Ricks, stepsisters Peggy Bonneau, Pat (Melvin) Hines, Diane Card, and stepbrother Joe David, treasured friends John W***y, Arnold Korenek, and numerous nephews and nieces.
