Annuals season is a wild ride 🌸
And every garden needs attention at the exact same time 😝🌸

Hundreds of annuals planted, countless watering cans emptied, one eye on the forecast at all times, and plenty of dirt under our fingernails.

The gardens may not be at their peak yet, but that's part of the magic.

Right now we're planting the promise of summer.

Just give them a few weeks and they'll be full and bursting with color 🌈

Can't wait to watch these beds, borders & containers fill in 🌿✨

I know what you're thinking...
"That's not Michigan's state flower."

Have you driven anywhere lately? 😅

Every spring, tulips emerge, peonies stretch toward the sun, and traffic cones mysteriously colonize every major roadway in the state.

Nature is beautiful.

Happy construction season, Michigan. 🚧🌼

POV: you open my car in May 🌸😅

My car currently smells like a greenhouse and I’m not mad about it.

Not every struggling patch of lawn needs more seed, more fertilizer, or more frustration. 🌿

Sometimes the better solution is to stop fighting the site conditions and redesign the space into something healthier, more functional, and easier to maintain.

Last fall, we created the new stone edging to bring structure and flow to the space. This spring, we expanded the beds using a layered smothering approach to naturally suppress grass while building healthier soil underneath. ✨

A quick visual transformation above ground… while the real soil-building magic happens underneath.

One of my favorite parts of this work is helping clients reimagine spaces they’ve struggled with for years 🌿

Last season, we transformed a lawn extension into a layered garden space using a blend of Michigan natives and a few classic garden favorites. This year, we’re continuing the process by restoring another nearby bed that had become heavily grass-infested.

Thoughtful gardens aren’t built overnight. They evolve season by season, layer by layer, as the plants settle in and the ecosystem strengthens.

Grateful for clients who trust the process and invite me back to keep building alongside them 💚

Most people see overgrowth and think about what should be removed.
I’m usually thinking about where the land wants to lead you. 🌿

This project in Costa Rica wasn’t just path clearing. It was about restoring movement through the landscape again. Making space to walk, pause, explore, and safely reach parts of the property that had slowly disappeared back into the jungle.

And one of the coolest parts? As we opened the trails back up, the property owners realized they actually had access down to the river along part of their land that had been completely hidden by growth.

One of my favorite details was the earth stairs my husband built by hand into the hillside. No concrete. No flashy materials. Just shaped soil, sweat, and intention. 🪵🌎

There’s something deeply satisfying about restoring access to a place. Suddenly light reaches the forest floor again. Air moves differently. You notice textures, sounds, tiny plants, birds, shadows. The land feels alive in a new way once you can move through it.

Sometimes the most meaningful part of a landscape is simply being able to experience it again.

To everyone who got excited and planted early… I see you 👀🌸
(and honestly, same energy 😂)

Temps are dipping tonight, so give those tender annuals a little extra love.

Cover them before bed and thank yourself in the morning ❄️🌿
Even a sheet or bucket works!

…and don’t forget to uncover them tomorrow once temps warm up ☀️

Noticed this little patch of purple deadnettle in a nearby garden and had to pause 👀🌿

Most people would pull this out immediately…
but honestly, I love it.

Early spring can look a little empty
& plants like this step in to fill the gaps:
~ covering bare soil
~ feeding early pollinators
~ showing up before most plants are even awake

Not permanent… just perfectly timed ✨

There’s something about it that feels like early spring energy too ~ quiet persistence, a little softness, life returning before everything else catches up.

Not everything that wasn’t planted is out of place 🌱

I almost had a full panic spiral thinking I found a rattlesnake under a mulch tarp today…

Turns out this was a Eastern Milk Snake ~ completely harmless and apparently… a professional impersonator.

When they feel threatened, they vibrate their tail to mimic a rattlesnake 🐍😳

Like SIR!
You do not even have the equipment for that!

Gave him space and he slithered off like nothing happened.

10/10 performance
would be fooled again.
