OK all you architectural sleuths time for the answer. Our AR Enhanced Intern team member, Isabella, took the prize with this answer: “Maybe since it’s so low and possibly on a flood plain near a river the holes might be meant for water and air to pass through.” Bingo. The key clue given was that this home was in Sacramento County, which lies in the flood plain of the Sacramento Delta watershed. So, like the home pictured in this post which was just down the street from the quiz home, homes to be built to survive a flood should the waters of the Delta ever breach the elaborate system of levies that the Army Core of Engineers have built. The “windows” on the quiz home are flood vents designed to open in case of a flood and relieve the force of flood water hydrostatic pressure that could cause structural damage or even sweep the house away. Congratulations Isabella!

Whenever our Principal, Michael Klement, heads out on a vacation he always sends back to the AR Team a little architectural quiz to test their knowledge. To add a little fun, it is structured as a friendly competition, so in addition to bragging rights, a little prize is awarded to whomever gives the most complete and correct answer. This time Michael was traveling to Sacramento County for a family reunion. The quiz asked posed the following question: what were little “windows” at the lower level on this new home currently under construction. Anyone want to take the challenge?? The correct answer will be revealed this coming Sunday. Here's a hint carefully study all photos!

Our principal Michael Klement had the recent opportunity to visit with our clients Jeff and Isabelle for their project closeout meeting. This whole house remodel is what we at AR call a complete transformation… living space reimagined, indeed! Congratulations Jeff and Isabelle and welcome to your new home- at your same address!

We thought we would share this wonderful note we received recently from our clients, Jeff and Sandy, owners of The Sanctuary at Hope Farms. Jeff and Sandy took on our “home fun“ assignment at the commencement of their project and produced this wonderful spiral bound document, capturing their hopes and dreams. What resulted was nothing short of amazing… as you can read in their own words: “When our family had the privilege to build our dream home, we were driven by two core values: environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. We were immediately drawn to Architectural Resource who are recognized as award winning architects and genuine thought leaders on how to build responsibly, creatively, and cost effectively to harness the natural benefits of the earth and to be responsible to our shared planet and natural resources. From solar power generation, to geothermal cooling, to bird safe glass, every step of the process was guided by their expertise in environmental sustainability. The team at AR also took our family on an amazing learning adventure from the importance of “aging in place” design to the importance of new wall structures and interior/exterior insulation technologies to maximize cooling in summer and heating in winter, while also maximizing our financial investment over the long term. From the founding principal, to the entire professional team and interns, that culture of thought leadership and educational collaboration with their clients shines through in every interaction. They are simply brilliant, patient, and kind people to work with and I would highly recommend Architectural Resource as a true partner in any project, whether smaller scale renovations to bring out the true potential of your existing home or pursuing your dream to build from the ground up to reach the sky and fill your soul in new and inspiring ways.

We're in the news! We are excited to share that in conjunction with celebrating our 35-year anniversary of inspired architectural design we are featured in the current issue of The Crazy Wisdom Community Journal. This wonderful article, masterfully written and photographed by Hilary Nichols, talks about our company and shares insightful personal cameos on each of our design professionals. It does an excellent job of sharing AR's story and really captures the essence of our 'Why'… answering the deeply moving, and unsettling, question posed by our Principal's granddaughter. See that question and read the full article here.

We had a fabulous event and wonderful turnout at our recent Visible Green Home® Burh Becc at Beacon Springs Earth Day Tour. The attendees were treated to an in-depth, information packed, personal guided tour by Architectural Resource Project Designer Alex Jackson. In a time when we are becoming painfully aware of just how fragile the global fossil-fuel based energy system truly is it was an inspiration for the attendees to visit, learn and experience first-hand a home that is 100% powered by the sun… with 20% over production- including charging an electric vehicle!

As we witness fossil fuel dependence cause global economic upheaval you'll have a chance to learn about a home with complete energy independence at our upcoming Visible Green Home® Earth Day Celebration Tour of BURH BECC at BEACON SPRINGS, April 25th. Once we had designed the home with a high-performance energy conserving envelope and ultra-efficient energy utilization equipment, we turned our attention to renewable, on-site energy generation. Using a 16.8 Kw PV Array this home produces annually 20% MORE energy than it needs… including charging an EV! No one can blockade sunlight. Register HERE

In the wake of the recent EF-1 tornado event in Ann Arbor our client, Jeff, sent this email describing his experience tucked away in his FEMA P-320 Storm Proof designed safe room serving double duty as a Primary Suite Walk-in Closet: "I was literally as cool as a cucumber in there. Felt safe, prepared, and I watched as long as I could from the Great Hall main windows where I could see the wall cloud and multiple vortices spinning to the northwest coming east. Knowing we had the lightning protection system in place as well as the safe room made me 100% calm. Worth every penny of the investments! That's what we at AR call 'The Homes of the Future- Today®'

One of the things that you will learn about at our upcoming Visible Green Home® Earth Day Celebration Tour of BURH BECC at BEACON SPRINGS on April 25th will be our use of rainwater harvesting. Working with Dave Stark of RMS we installed a rainwater collection system consisting of three, 2,500 gallon buried rainwater storage tanks all connected together in a series. These three tanks are designed to capture and hold 100% of the water required for the home's use. The water is then pumped to a filtration system in the home. Since placed into operation the system has never once come even close to running dry. Drinking from the sky!

One of the things that you will learn about at our upcoming Visible Green Home® Earth Day Celebration Tour of BURH BECC at BEACON SPRINGS on April 25th will be our use of TROMBE Walls. A Trombe wall is a passive solar heating system consisting of a masonry wall covered with a dark selective surface designed to absorb over 95% of the incident solar energy while re-radiating only 5%. This is then covered on the exterior by a layer of glass with a small air gap in between creating a greenhouse effect. Named after French engineer Félix Trombe, who popularized the design in the 1960s, it functions as a "solar collector" that absorbs heat during the day and slowly releases it into a building at night.
