What's next for Stanford Enterprises? Going back into history to yesteryear!
I have the pleasure and luck to restore a well pump house on a farm established around 1850. Back then a source of water was a crucial component in setting up a homestead or farm. Water was needed for cooking and cleaning and lots of water was needed on a farm for crops and livestock.
"During the 19th century, windmills were utilized for various purposes. They played a crucial role in grain grinding and milling, as they were used to harness the power of wind to turn the millstones and crush grains into flour. This was especially important for rural communities where agriculture was a prominent occupation.
Additionally, windmills were used for pumping water. They were equipped with pumps that could lift water from wells or other water sources to higher levels. This was particularly valuable in areas where access to water was limited, or where manual labor for pumping was difficult." *
The pump house, I'm starting to work on, was for water on this farm. You have seen the old time wind mills like in the picture below. They are a pyramid shape metal frame work putting the wheel up into the wind high above ground. There is a connecting rod from the gearbox above down to the pump at ground level. One problem with this in a cold climate, was freezing in the winter. One solution was to enclose the pump area. This pump house was created inside that metal structure and is why the walls are splayed out like you see. This wind mill metal frame is long gone maybe collected during the scrape metal drives helping the war efforts in WW1 or WW2. We have yet to determine the exact construction date of this out building. Stay tuned in to see the progress and details of what we are going to do. * Excerpt from https://19thcentury.us/19th-century-windmill/
