🚽 This Is Why I Always Tell People To Scope The Sewer 🚽
These are the common sewer line materials you will run into and they all have their own way of failing.
Cast iron can look solid but be rusting out from the inside. Clay holds up for a long time but roots love the joints and once they get in they keep growing. PVC and ABS are generally better but I still see bad installs or joints separating. Orangeburg just slowly crushes and goes out of round with age.
Most of the time everything in the house still seems fine while this is happening. Toilets flush sinks drain nothing obvious is backing up yet.
That is why I always suggest a sewer scope before buying a house. It is one of the only ways to actually see what condition that line is in instead of hoping it is fine.
It is a simple check that can save you from a very expensive surprise.
