If you missed it, the recording of my talk 🌸The Garden is a Mirror: How to Reflect Yourself and the Natural World in Your Garden Design🌸 is now up!

Check out the lovely blog post written by Nik Haven of Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay Chapter to watch it!

Attendees of our March Garden Chat were treated to an inspiring presentation by chapter member, Miranda Yourick, owner of Earthly Delights Native Gardening. Miranda’s presentation “The Garden is a Mirror”, made me realize that I have a wild, witchy, whimsical garden, accented with paths and ar...

Introducing Round-lobed Hepatica! The genus name "Hepatica" refers to the 3-lobed leaf that resembles the liver and which people thought could be used to cure liver ailments. You can find this adorable little plant blooming on rocky outcrops and in crevices. The flowers range from white to pink to purple and shoot up from the cluster of mottled foliage on fuzzy stems. Because they bloom so early, they are a critical pollen source for pollinators. Later in the season, the plant produces seeds with a nutrient-rich, fatty appendage called an elaiosome. Ants carry these seeds to their nests, feed the elaiosome to their larvae, and discard the seed, allowing for germination in a process called myrmecochory! 🐜🐜🌱

🌸The Birth Month Native Flower Project🌼 I love the idea of a birth month flower but because of when and where they were conceived of, all the flowers are European! In 2026, I will be painting a series of watercolors with a native flower that blooms in each month to replace the usual birth flowers!

What would you like your native birth flower to be??

Some of our seeds were so eager for Spring that they started to sprout in the fridge!! Since the weather has stopped us from getting our beautiful new greenhouse installed, we put together a quick growing setup in the sun porch. I’m dying to get all of them growing soon!!

Species are Anise Hyssop, Lanceleaf Coreopsis, Black-eyed Susan, False Sunflower, and Jacob’s Ladder.

Oh, you thought you had to wait for February's flower? Introducing Skunk Cabbage! I'm real jealous of February birthdays because I LOVE Skunk Cabbage flowers. The spathe is a mottled dark purple and light green surrounding the spiky yellow spadix, which admittedly smells like a trash can in order to attract flies for pollination 😅 Skunk Cabbage is Maryland's earliest-blooming wildflower, creating enough heat to melt the frozen ground and allow it to bloom! It's a great reminder that despite the stillness of winter, life is still thriving.

January is a little different because I chose a berry, not a bloom. There is nearly zero blooming happening in January, but you are sure to see the vibrant 🔴pop of red🔴 radiating from the Winterberry, Ilex verticillata, among the dreary background colors! Winterberries are also a vital food source for birds at this time of year!

Stay tuned for February's reveal!! Can you guess what it is? 🤔
