📣 It's time to de-thatch your lawn! 📣

Spring is here and it's time to start thinking about getting your lawn in shape for the upcoming season. One important task that should be on your to-do list is de-thatching your yard. De-thatching is the process of removing the layer of dead grass, leaves, and other debris that accumulates on your lawn over time. This layer of thatch can prevent water, air, and nutrients from reaching the roots of your grass. This can lead to a weak and unhealthy lawn.

De-thatching your yard is especially important if you have a warm-season grass like Bermuda or Zoysia, as these types of grass tend to produce more thatch than cool-season grasses. 🚨PSA for Centipede Lawns🚨

Expect “winter kill” in Centipede lawns due to frozen precipitation laying on lawn for 24+ hours. You won't know the exact extent of the damage until Spring green-up. Some areas will green up and some will be gray or light tan. It can recover throughout the Summer but sometimes it won't recover at all. Expect the worst and hope for the best!

‼️ARMY WORMS ARE ON THE MARCH‼️

Be on the lookout for army worm activity in the morning or late afternoon. These are when the worms are the most active. Damage to lawns will result in large brown areas where the worms have eaten all the green leaves off and only leaving the stalks.

Another way to identify a worm infestation is seeing more birds than usual on your lawn.

If you have browned areas in your Bermuda turf, and if you’re fairly sure that you’re watering adequately, examine the lawn closely for armyworms. They mainly target Bermuda lawns but they can be found in Zoysia lawns too. If you find them, call the office at 256-820-4633 to schedule treatment. If you don't apply treatment, the worms will eat all the green off the lawn within a few days. The lawn will survive and green back up in a few weeks, and treatment will help keep them away.

What should you be doing for your lawn right now?

WATER, WATER, and WATER some more.

With rain being very sporadic and the temperatures being very high, your lawn is literally thirsting for water. This does not mean you need to water the lawn everyday, but when you do water, water DEEPLY.

You want to water deeply to get the root system in your lawn good and moisturized as deep down as you can. Instead of watering shallowly every day for only 15 minutes, water once or twice a week for an hour or so (or however long it takes to apply an inch of water) IN THE MORNING. When you only water your lawn for a short amount of time the moisture only stays at surface level and dries out very quickly.
