Did you know that chickens have three eyelids, similar to many other mammals and reptiles, including cats, dogs, polar bears, kangaroos, frogs, snakes, and crocodiles? This third eyelid is called the nictitating membrane, a transparent or translucent lid that moves horizontally across the eye from the inner corner, protecting and moistening the eye while removing debris and dust. It's especially crucial for animals living in dusty or windy environments or those that swim underwater. In this picture, I managed to capture a chicken's blink with her nictitating membrane at just the right time!
