There’s a few new ornamental plants joining all the fruit trees at the nursery:

Spider lily (Hymenocallis littoralis)
Long, strappy foliage with fragrant white flowers that look like spiders.

'Mother-in-law’s tongue' / snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria trifasciata)
A tough, low-maintenance plant for containers, patios or indoors.

‘Moonshine’ snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata ‘Moonshine’)
Broad, silvery-green leaves with a clean, modern look.

Edible plants are still our thing. We’re just leafing out a little bit.

Bringing some pokey friends to work.

I think it's time. I miss seeing my little cactus friends while I'm at the nursery. So the next logical step is to start bringing some to work, right?

We're going to start with a small assortment of cactus and if ya'll like that we'll bring in more and a wider variety.

We will have cuttings and potted cactus. Cactus will be our first step into trialing local delivery through carrier services and shipping cuttings and bare root cacti. (Just have a little patience while I figure out how to set that up).

We have a bunch of little seedlings started, always looking for the next funky variegated, monstrose, crested, glaucous beauty!

BYOB: Bring Your Own Bucket

Partially decomposed pine mulch is now available by the bucket.

5-gallon bucket: $8
Smaller buckets: $2 per gallon

Bring your own bucket, fill it up, and take home what you need. Good for top dressing containers, garden beds, pathways, or adding organic matter as it continues to break down.

Buckets needs to be your own. We’re just supplying the mulch.

Yesterday I realized it was the end of the month and I hadn't planted anything for my goal to plant something every month of the year.

The back of the nursery has an area that has very little in terms of plant canopy so I want to start filling in some of that space.

I decided to plant a Shanxi Li Jujube (Chinese date) tree. It will be able to tolerate the summer sun and heat and be the start of a gentler microclimate for that section of the nursery.

It is being planted under 30% shade cloth for the rest of the summer, next year it should be able to take on the full AZ sun on its own.



The roots were circling the container so I ended up knocking off the soil and teasing the roots out so that they wouldn't continue to circle after planting.

I used native soil to back fill a mound so I could place the root ball on top and direct the roots outward.

You may notice that below the red line the trunk is darker than the section above. That is where the soil line was in the container.

So when you read general planting guides and it instructs you to plant at a depth to the current soil level in the container keep in mind that it may be planted too deep in the nursery container.

For trees you should at least have the root flair level with the soil. I like to leave the root flair slightly above because there is going to be some minor settling.

If the tree is planted too deep it can be susceptible to rot, lack of oxygen and stem girdling roots, essentially choking itself out as it grows.

The tree did need some support help. When staking a tree you don't want to stake or tie it down so tight that the tree can't move and sway with the wind.

The movement encourages the tree to establish wider and deeper roots and focus energy on trunk strength and durability.

It's similar to wearing a cast for a broken bone. The limb loses muscle mass and starts to atrophy from a lack of movement. So let it sway. And don't leave it staked for more than a year.
