A follow-up to the reel yesterday of a partially eaten fig. These organza bags work great for keeping birds and other pests off the fruit.

Sure it's a little extra work, but it's quick and easy to put a drawstring bag over fruit when you're thinning the tree to improve the quality of the fruit. Quality over quantity.

Works for a wide variety of fruits, the bags are inexpensive, breathable and reusable. Keep a few uncovered so the birds and bugs have some sacrificial fruit to eat.

A little landscaping tip. Plant a creosote bush near a window, so when it rains you can open the window and fill your entire home with the aroma of desert rain. 🌵❤️

Love it when watering and come across ripe fruit, it would be nice if the birds weren't experts on detecting when fruit is at its peak.

What do you do to keep birds off your figs?

Did you plant a new tree this year? Monsoon season is here, and those young trees need a little extra help to make it through their first big desert storms.

Stake the tree, but leave room to flex: New trees need support, but don't lock them down completely rigid. They need enough slack to sway a little in the wind, that natural movement builds trunk strength and encourages root growth.

Water deep to anchor the roots: Skip the quick surface splashes. Run your drip or hose long enough to soak deep into the soil. We want those roots growing downward to anchor the tree, not staying shallow where the wind can easily flip the root ball.

Protect with mulch: Lay down 2–4 inches of mulch over the root zone to hold in moisture and keep the soil cool. Just make sure the mulch isn't piled directly against the bark, keep it a few inches back from the trunk.

Hold off on the fertilizer: It is tempting to push growth, but forcing rapid, tender new branches right before high-wind season just creates weak points that snap easily. Let it establish naturally for now.

Meet Oscar, the official Tropica nursery dog. He can get a little excited when exploring the nursery, so you might not get to meet him in person.

Just a fun little peek into after-hours nursery life.

Barbados Cherry (aka Acerola) is a fast-growing tropical shrub that absolutely loves the sun. It pumps out bright red fruit that's packed with Vitamin C and has a great sweet-tart flavor, perfect for eating fresh, tossing in smoothies, or making jams.

Because it’s so versatile, you can keep it as a large bush, train it into a small focal tree, or line a few up as an edible hedge.

Why we love it:

Heat loving: Thrives in our brutal summers.
Evergreen: Stays green through mild winters.
Versatile: Does great in containers or planted in-ground.

Ours are putting on a ton of new growth right now and are ready for a spot in your yard. Come grab one before they're gone!

Pomegranates

Most nurseries and grocery stores only carry a single variety: 'Wonderful'. It’s a great pomegranate, but it’s a bit like only ever eating Granny Smith apples when there’s a whole world of flavor out there.

We currently have 11 different varieties in stock, and they all offer something different:

Pure sweetness: Varieties like Eversweet and A.C. Sweet are low-acid and sweet even before they're fully ripe.  Bonus: Eversweet has a pale, clear juice that is non-staining.

Rich, complex flavors: Parfianka and Sharp Velvet have that deep, wine-like, sweet-tart balance.

Soft seeds: If you hate the feeling of chewing on crunchy seeds, varieties like Parfianka, Ariana, and Eversweet have very soft, easily chewable seeds that you barely notice.

Pomegranates do extraordinarily well in our climate, once established they're nearly indestructible. They can be trained as a nice compact tree or a multi-trunk shrub providing shade and privacy.

Got a favorite variety, or looking for a specific flavor profile? Drop a comment or swing by the nursery and we'll help you pick the right one.
