Mystic Plant Room

Mystic Plant Room Hey Appleton! I love the smell of the earth and watching things grow. This was my deep dive into plant parenthood again, as life was changing. It was amazing!

Parking lot and free street parking In the early 90's I took a job working in a garden center and then became a "plant lady" caring for business plants, where I gained basic plant care knowledge, about all kinds of plants. Fast forward 30 years, out of state moves, career and a

kid....Plants had become very therapeutic to many people during the pandemic and people were hooked. In 2021 I started selling my plant propagations at the local farmers market and on Facebook. People of all walks and ages would stop to talk plants. So after 10 years of selling my handmade wears, I decided it would be nice to incorporate my passions (plants, sewing, crochet, nature and the moon) into a brick & mortar shop. Today, my goal is to share this knowledge with customers.

isn't just about giving your plant a bigger pot. It's about making sure the roots have the right environment to thrive.

Signs it may be time to repot:
🌿 Roots growing out of drainage holes
🌿 Roots circling the pot
🌿 Soil breaking down and becoming compacted
🌿 Plant drying out unusually fast
🌿 Growth has slowed despite proper care

Bigger isn't always better - Unlike outdoor gardening, most houseplants only need to move up 1–2 inches in pot size when repotting. Too much extra soil can stay wet for too long and increase the risk of root rot.

In fact, I've had plants come in that actually needed to go DOWN a pot size because the roots were too small for the container they were in.

What about rocks in the bottom of the pot? Despite the popular advice, rocks do not improve drainage. They actually create conditions where water stays higher in the pot, keeping roots wetter longer.

A pot with drainage holes and an appropriate soil mix is usually all you need.

Water running straight through the pot? That doesn't automatically mean your plant needs a bigger pot. Sometimes the soil has become hydrophobic, meaning it has dried out so much that it repels water. Bottom watering or slowly rehydrating the soil may solve the problem.

Plants are incredibly resilient, and they often surprise us with what they can recover from. Sometimes we can propagate, divide, or rehab them back into health, and sometimes we can’t. Either way, they teach patience, observation, and careβ€”and if you're unsure what you're looking at, that’s exactly what I’m here for.

One simple tip:
If you're not sure whether a plant needs repotting, gently slide the root ball out and take a look. Not sure what you're seeing? Bring your plant in during warmer weather, email or text for guidance.

Summer plant care reminder
🌞
West and south facing windows can get much hotter than we realize. A sheer curtain, slightly closed blinds, or moving plants back from the glass can help prevent scorched leaves.
Check on your plant friends and make sure they’re getting enough water during these intense sunny days! 🌿
Once fall arrives and the light softens, you can usually start moving plants closer to the window again or open the shades back up.
Check on your little plant friends before they get sunburned. 🌿

Sphagnum moss is a natural material often used for:
🌿 Rooting cuttings - Prop boxes
🌿 Growing orchids & some carnivorous plants
🌿 Moss poles
🌿 Reptile Terrariums
🌿 Increasing moisture around plant roots

One of its biggest benefits is that it can hold a large amount of water while still allowing airflow ~ In stock at the shop!!
🌱
🌱
Did you know that sphagnum moss, peat moss, and Spanish moss are three completely different things?
🌿 Sphagnum Moss – Often used for propagation, orchids, and moss poles.
🌾 Peat Moss – A common soil amendment that helps retain moisture
🌿 Spanish Moss – Not actually a moss at all! It's an air plant commonly used for decoration.

Happy Summer Solstice! β˜€οΈ

Today marks the longest day of the year and the official start of summer.

For houseplants, longer daylight hours often mean:
🌿 Increased growth
🌿 More frequent watering needs
🌿 A good time to fertilize actively growing plants

Take a moment today to enjoy some sunshine and appreciate the growth happening around you.

Shopping after work?
🌿
If making it in before 5 has been tricky, I've got good news!
🌈 For the rest of June, I'll be hanging around the shop a little later on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Till at least 6 ~ If the rainbow OPEN sign is on, come on in! I'd love to see a few more evening visitors and find out if later hours are something the community would enjoy.
