We’ve been noticing a trend in the industry… AI. Not just clients, but landscape companies, turning to Artificial Intelligence to create plans. In some cases, we are seeing a decent “start” to a solution, but nothing that could meet the nuances a real, skilled Landscape Architect incorporates.

AI can paint a “pretty picture” but is incapable of contemplating drainage patterns, compensating for variations in soil makeup, engineering for environmental deviations, or even accurately plan for elevation changes. That doesn’t even include designing for harmonizing materials based on color, texture, bloom cycles, foliage and bloom heights, or snow load.

We LOVE technology… AutoCAD was one of the greatest inventions for improving the accuracy of our plans, but AI will probably never be more than a conceptual tool in a “conditions-driven” industry, like landscape architecture. So go ahead and play. Have fun dreaming. When you’re ready, we’ll be ready to work with you to smooth out the rough edges and make your plan come to reality… or… Hire us from the start to do the intellectual work to give you the design of your dreams AND manage the installation so you get EXACTLY what you are dreaming of.

The lilacs are pushing! With this past week’s heat, we should see blooms by the end of next week… first week of May at the latest. Just a reminder, DO NOT PRUNE until after blooming or you will lose all of this year’s flowers. LILACS bloom on last season’s growth ONLY. Have a great spring, friends!

Whether commercial or residential, a landscape should speak to the viewer in all four seasons. Here is an example of the late fall/early winter season at the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. You can see how the plaza provides color and texture and the plants continue to provide vertical structureto the garden. The installation, now fifteen years complete, presents a highly satisfying appearance. The hedges have matured, connecting and achieving a uniform trim, while the trees have taken on their planned structured shape. The paving, too, has developed a refined patina. The compass rose patio has fully realized its intended sense of place. Our satisfaction with the outcome is considerable, as it has surpassed our original expectations. Collaboration on this project with an exceptional client (and friend) was a true pleasure.

Sometimes, it’s the people who make this career so special. Yesterday, we had the joy of meeting with a client we’ve know for 17+ years. Part of the time was to connect as friends, part of the time was to reflect on how the design has evolved (the client says it is “park-like”), and part of the time was to discuss creating an English Knot Garden to accentuate the property. Our clients are friends forever… Sometimes we are blessed to work together on new projects but we are always blessed to have a cup of tea/lemonade, catch up, laugh, and live. ,
