Epiphyllum Society of America

Epiphyllum Society of America An organization open to all who are interested in these beautiful and exotic flowers.

In 1940, epiphyllums were a relatively unknown species; were carried by only a few nurseries, were expensive and collected by relatively few people. Hybridizing was being performed and the different Nurseries and individuals were naming new varieties. It was inevitable that the same name was sometimes given to more than one variety. On May 5, 1940, a group of collectors and nursery people got toge

ther to form a rather exclusive group known as the Epiphyllum Society of America. A major purpose of this society was to generate a list of the various names, both to prevent the same name being used more than once and to generate a directory of which nursery had a particular variety. The names of some of the founders live on in still collected flowers such as 'Wegener Pet' and 'Pete's Snowflake'. The list has significant information and a large number of later registrations, and was known for many years as the "Directory of Species and Hybrids". The listing of which nursery has what variety is no longer practical, so since it was no longer a "directory", the name has been changed to "Register of Species and Hybrids". As the years passed, the ESA decided that the exclusive nature of the society no longer made sense, so it became an organization open to all who were interested in these beautiful and exotic flowers. The most important event in the history of the Epiphyllum Society of America [ESA] took place at the end of July 1998. The International Society for Horticulture Science [ISHS] appointed the ESA the International Cultivar Registration Authority [ICRA] for the epiphytic cacti hybrids of the Hylocereeae Tribe. The appointment effectively legitimizes fifty-eight years of ESA work as de facto registrar.

The ESA is proud to present this year's 2021 ESA Founders' Award to Australian hybridizer, Tony Hanson.

Tony is considered one of the founding fathers of the epiphytic cacti hobby in Australia. In 1984, he formed the Epiphytic Cactaceae-Asclepiadaceae Society of Australia and was the inaugural President for many years, leading initiatives such as the Epiphyllon newsletter. Although he had created many hybrids for decades, the "Ulana"s were only recently introduced to the ESA Registry in 2020. We expect to see many more Ulana hybrids in the coming years with efforts being made to confirm the plants against Tony's handwritten notes and photos. Huge THANKS to Michael Guillot, who is also the registrant for Tony Hanson's hybrids, for making the 8 hr long trip to deliver the award announcement.

You can find out more information about Tony Hanson and his upcoming hybrids, as well as other Australian epi hybrids, by becoming a member of the ESA.

Congratulations to Tony Hanson and the Australian epi community!

The Epiphyllum Society of America (ESA) is pleased to announce the election of Eddie Huey and Beth Jackson as Co-Registrars of the ESA Registration Committee.

The ESA is the International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) for Cactaceae Juss. Tribe Hylocereeae.

ICRAs are appointed by the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and must operate within the provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP).

The ESA, as ICRA, 1) registers cultivar names (epithets) in the denomination class for which they are responsible, 2) ensures the names (epithets) registered comply with the latest edition of the ICNCP, 3) publish full lists of all cultivar epithets in the denomination class, and 4) maintain records, in as much detail as practical, of the origin, characteristics and history of each cultivar in the denomination class.

Eddie Huey has been an epiphyllum enthusiast since 2004. Eddie was the Founder and Administrator of EpiForums, a discussion forum website dedicated to epiphytic cacti. He is currently the Founder of the largest Epiphyllum group on Facebook and is serving his first term as both an Officer and Board member of the ESA.

Beth Jackson has been growing epiphyllums for over 25 years. Beth has served on the San Diego Epiphyllum Society Board since 2005, in various capacities, including director, membership secretary, and corresponding secretary, and has been a member of the ESA's Registration Committee since 2018.

The Epiphyllum Society of America would like to thank Derek T. Obayashi for his many years of commitment and dedication as Registrar for the Registry of Hybrids and Species.

The current committee is composed of Jeff Bates, Eddie Huey, Beth Jackson and Jim Nones.
Please direct any registration inquiries for the registrars to [email protected]
