WINSLOW ARCHITECTS IN THE COVID ERA

Who would have thought that Architects and Architecture could be practiced remotely? Not me, being of a certain age and background. Architecture is such a “hands-on profession” reliant on constant contact with clients, consultants, builders and site visits.

Well, the technology geniuses thought it could be done - and they are right. Thanks to all of the various technologies - and thanks to the millennials on our staff who seem to have been born with this insight - Winslow Architects is fully operational remotely from our homes, continuing to provide its full range of architectural services. Zooming, Teamviewing, Doxy.me, Google Hang Out, bitmoji-ing on occasion, and of course good old fashioned emailing.

Winslow Architects recently completed a 16-unit multifamily building in Cambridge with Just A Start and is currently designing 40 units in Yarmouth (Commonwealth Community Developers, Delphi Construction, Coastal Engineering Company, Inc., Wozny/Barbar & Associates), 50 units in Westminster with LandTech Consultants, Inc. and 36 units in Medfield with Corrigan Developments – all either in construction or getting ready to go.

Our work also includes a substantial amount of renovation such as the renovation of 165-unit 20 story apartment building with the Boston Housing Authority and numerous other Housing Authorities around the Commonwealth on building modernization projects.

All of this being done remotely. Remarkable and instructive!

WINSLOW ARCHITECTS INC. (WAI) has teamed up with Developer Jim Perrine of Commonwealth Community Developers (CCD) to design Yarmouth Gardens – a 40 unit affordable housing development in Yarmouth. This development was recently honored with an award of Tax Credit funding by the State. Competition for these funds is highly competitive as they are only awarded once per year and are limited. With this funding in place, the development will be able to commence construction in the Spring of 2020.

WINSLOW ARCHITECTS INC. designed the new building at 50 York Street as a single building consisting of components and massing that combined contemporary architectural styling with the character of the surrounding triple deckers characteristic of this mid-Cambridge neighborhood. Winslow Architects assembles a team of consulting engineers to provide full architectural and engineering design services for affordable housing. For 50 York Street, this A/E team consisted of Lenard Engineering (Civil), Norian/Siani Engineering, Inc (MEP), DM Berg Consultants (Structural) and Hammer+Walsh Design (Landscape Architecture).

Owned and developed by Just A Start Corporation and constructed by Nei General Contracting, this development showed just how quickly housing can get approved and constructed when a neighborhood, developer, City and State all share a common goal - namely, the replacement of much needed affordable housing. It was designed, approved, financed, constructed and re-occupied in just over 2 years!

Tej Vashee of Winslow Architects Inc. now a Massachusetts Registered Architect.

Winslow Architects Inc (WAI) is pleased and proud to announce that Tej Vashee - a WAI employee since 2013 - is now a Massachusetts Registered Architect. Tej was born and raised in Zambia before attending the Graduate School of Architecture at Auburn University. After graduating in 2013, Tej came to the Boston area and joined the WAI staff. He has steadily grown as an Architect and developed specialties in the design, construction documentation and administration of affordable housing. Recently Tej has taken increased responsibility for WAI work with Local Housing Authorities.

Little known fact about Tej is that he played golf at a nearly professional level and was on the Zambia National Golf team. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to make use of that skill but are now open to challenge matches with any other firm in the Boston area. John Winslow will be the cheerleader.

WINSLOW ARCHITECTS INC. is seeking an entry level architect to assist with the various tasks associated with production of our projects - documenting existing conditions, assistance with graphics required for project proposals, assistance in preparation of construction documents and construction administration. Winslow Architects focuses primarily on affordable & market rate multifamily housing - both new construction and renovation. We also work with municipalities in providing complete building envelope renovation/modernization for Local Housing Authorities and other municipal entities.

Qualifications:

- Prefer at least 2 years architectural office experience
- Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD
- Knowledge of wood frame construction
- Experience with preparation of construction documents

WINSLOW ARCHITECTS INC is seeking a Senior Architect with minimum 10 years experience as an architect and strong project management skills to help run an expanding 9 person architectural firm. We are open to a younger person ready to advance to this level - although compatibility and strong ability to relate to clients is essential. Our firm has two specialties - the design and construction administration of multifamily housing and the renovation/modernization of building envelopes for municipalities. We hope to expand our services to include institutional clients and would like to hire a Senior Architect who can help bring this client base to our firm.

Qualifications:

-10 years experience with design and construction documents for wood frame multifamily housing
- Registered Architect, or nearing completion of ARE exams
- Ability to multitask and work collaboratively with diverse personalities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- High level of experience with Revit required - including creating families, filing systems, modeling and construction document production
- Proficiency desirable with AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suites, InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
