Fab collab with Lauren, Sutphin Arch and the whole build team on this meditation garden behind a gym structure in Vienna. The antique limestone trough was repurposed for a fountain that spills into a rill. It creates a contemplative focal point from a soaking tub and yoga platform. Bliss!

There’s something special about a client who wants their property to tell the full story of Virginia’s landscape.

This project was an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable diversity of ecotypes the site had to offer —from shaded woodland edges and moist riparian corridors to sun-drenched uplands and meadow pockets. Each zone got its own native plant community, a curated reflection of the wild landscapes that make this region so extraordinary.

Happy birthday to Allie! An amazing pro on site and great mentor at the office. And great plant knowledge to boot!

Successful tree planting means a considered an deliberate strategy for soil, aeration, and drainage. Horn & Co.’s project in Maryland incorporated the use of silver cells to better allow these trees to succeed.

In Maryland and the rest of the DC area, immigrant laborers comprise 40-50% of the workforce.

Without them, fewer trees will be planted and and those that do are planted without the expertise for them to thrive.

Out green roof is waking up! I was worried how things like maidenhair fern and crested iris would fare after this winter, but they look as good as ever. A nice case to show green roofs can thrive even in densely shaded conditions!

It’s a special spring for the redbud. The blooms on these trees are triggered by temperature rather than day length, and so for the past few years, we’ve seen them blooming beneath a forest canopy of bare branches.

But this year, since we’ve had a cold winter, their blossoms are interwoven among the spring green leaves of oaks, tuliptrees and maples.

We also get to see them blooming with dogwoods, which only happens so often, as dogwood blossoms are triggered by day length.
