The Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council provides training in tree planting, pruning, and urban forest care to support local communities. Arlington Parks, Recreation & Culture will be the host of a new training series beginning Sept. 1. Classes will be held every other Tuesday through Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendance at all sessions is required.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Oak Wilt has been found in Arlington, TX (76016)- a serious vascular disease for oak trees that has killed millions of oak trees in central Texas and other parts of the nation.

After sending a sample of a declining tree to the Texas A&M Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab for testing, we've received a positive test result for Oak Wilt- the first documented case in Arlington in over 20 years.

WHAT THIS MEANS: With this positive test, we strongly recommend that you take more caution when caring for your oak trees to help prevent the potential spread and impact of this disease on our community’s trees.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
- LIMIT pruning between the months of Feb-Jun. IDEAL PRUNING WINDOW: Jul-Jan.
- Avoid moving firewood- this can spread the disease and Oak Wilt-carrying insects to new trees.
- Immediately paint open wounds after pruning, sanitize blades in between pruning trees
- If you’re hiring a tree service, make sure they’re aware and knowledgeable about oak wilt and how to care for oaks in the local presence of this disease.

Here at Treehugger, we're trying to become more circular. What does this mean exactly? It means using less, reusing more, and taking advantage of Earth's natural cycles to lessen our overall impact. ♻️

This video highlights our newest piece of machinery that allows us to do just that- a Hiwasee X250 Compost Extractor. This machine allows us to make our own in-house compost extract, with the use of locally sourced 'ingredients': wood chips from our job sites, and spent beer grains & hops from our favorite local spot, Division Brewing.

Here are some responsible landscaping tips to help keep our local waterways healthy and clean.
- Manage Yard Waste: Never sweep or blow leaves, grass clippings, or tree trimmings into streets, gutters, concrete channels, or any waterway.
- Avoid or Reduce Chemical Usage: Limit the use of broad-spectrum pesticides by developing an Integrated Pest Management plan for your lawn and garden.
- Read the Label: Select and apply fertilizers or pesticides according to manufacturer instructions.
- Go Native: Part of a good Integrated Pest Management plan is starting with native and adaptive plants that require less water and fewer chemicals.
- Dispose of Trash Properly: Ensure that any yard waste debris is transported in a vehicle secured with a tarp or cover.

But only the invasive ones… Invasive trees are a problem in our landscape- they offer no ecological benefit to native animals and insects, and often outcompete our keystone plants for valuable resources.

Common examples of these invasive trees in North Texas include the Bradford Pear, Chinese Talow, Chinese Pistachio, and White Mulberry.
