Squash vine borer (Melittia cucurbitae) is a serious cucurbit pest in South Dakota that can quickly kill squash, pumpkins, and related crops by tunneling into plant stems and disrupting water and nutrient flow. Adult moths emerge from the soil in early summer (typically late June to early July), lay eggs at the base of host plants, and the resulting larvae bore into stems where they feed internally for several weeks, often causing sudden wilting and plant collapse. Management focuses on early detection of adult moth activity, scouting for eggs near the base of plants, and timely intervention such as removing infested plants, protecting stems with insecticides when moths are active, and using cultural practices like crop rotation and row covers to reduce infestations in future plantings.
