It's cold cold cold. With that being said, your furnace is in overdrive. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors in place. A furnace flue chimney system is just as important to maintain, as a fireplace chimney. Newer furnace's produce more condonsation. When mixed with the gases, the terra cotta flue liners began to spall (flaking off). When this happens, it can and will cause a blockage in the flue. Instead of the gases venting out the chimney, they can back draft into the home and cause a very dangerous situation.

So, what we are trying to say is if you heat with gas or oil. Make sure you have the furnace chimney inspected when you have your fireplace serviced. As the company that looks at your furnace, only services the furnace, not the chimney. That's what chimney companies are for.

Fireplace 101
With the temperature dipping, fireplace use will increase. Make sure to preheat the flue, before starting a fire. To do this, roll up a piece of newspaper like a tube, light 1 end and hold it up inside the upper part of the fireplace. ( Make sure the damper is open). The heat from the newspaper will help move the cold air sitting in your chimney upward. Then you can light the wood. This will allow the smoke to vent out the chimney, as it is designed to. By doing this, it will stop the smoke from back drafting into you home.

Get in the habit of doing this every time you build a fire.

Remember. We are here to help with all your fireplace issues.

Safe burning!

It is very important to maintain your fireplace.
Make sure your wood is dry and properly season. By doing this, it will reduce creosote build up in your chimney. You will still need to have your system swept. This will make it easier to remove any soot. We are always available to answer any questions you may have. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
