Yellow Birch (Betula alleghaniensis) is the signature species of Maine’s Acadian forests and prized for its valuable hardwood often used for cabinetry, flooring and furniture. Seldom used in landscapes, but might be my favorite native tree for woodland edge or naturalized areas. Its striking peeling golden-bronze bark, wintergreen-scented twigs, and vivid golden fall foliage provide year round interest in the landscape.

Indoors and out become one with this beautifully executed detail of using the same natural slabs of Oak Mountain Granite for the interior hallway that connects the outdoor kitchen and sun terraces.

An experiment I’ve been working on in this small, but dry-shade space that wasn’t going to support lawn, and it didn’t want to end up being a Hosta and mulch bed. Masses of Carex pensylvanica with Geranium maculatum foliage providing a nice contrast. The trick has been finding the right balance of watering and mulching, as both plants can tolerate dry soils once established, but need infrequent but deep watering to encourage rhizomal growth. Eventually this will lead to a fully interconnected network of plants that require very little maintenance.

Starting to get the feel for how this courtyard terrace will become an extension of the interior floor plan and expand the functional living space of the home. Plant material is really going to add warmth and balance to the space.
