A little restoration work and tuck pointing done on the Bear Den overlook yesterday. These stone were laid in 1940 using pneumatic air chisels to shape them and block and tackle to set them. Each one of these stone weighs anywhere from 200-600lb My how things have changed since these stone were set. After years of weathering, along with Hurricane Helene they were due for a little work to ensure this wall stands another 80 years.

Phase 1 is under way on the Parkway. This Headwall and drainage system on Ferrin K**b was originally constructed in 1935 using stone that was leftover from the construction of the tunnel that sits near by. It made it through Helene but just barely. Under ground springs reached their capacity and caused significant damage to the entire mountain. The amount of water that come through here is unfathomable it completely washed out the entire holler on the mountain causing the road and everything else to go down with it. As we rebuild it, and work with the exact same stone they tooled so many years ago I can't help but think about the men that stood in this very same place 90 years ago sweating, bleeding, and making sacrifies just trying to provide for their families the same as we do today. As we continue the rebuild across the NC section of the Parkway we are working hand in hand with some of the best contractors in WNC to make this place just as beautiful as its always been, we will continue to update yall on our progress, thanks for all yalls support on this Sunrise Masonry is blessed to be apart of this project, we are doing our part to ensure this masonry stands another century.
