Where does your compass point? Mine seems to keep taking me around and around in circles. It is a good journey though. And somehow even though the path is circular, I keep ending up in new places.

Come check out my page for insights into the woodturning process, thoughts and philosophies, and ramblings of a passionate artist and craftsman. Daily story posts and frequent in depth explanations. Oh and you may see some beautiful bowls and other wood-turned treasures.

MEGA ULTRA BLANK! Maxing out the Revo very soon here folks! May have to trim this down with a hand plane before spinning it up. Excited to see how this goes. American Sycamore. 18" x 6" blank. Green. Definitely a limb growing out of this piece. Can't wait to see how that looks. Maybe some figure in here. Am going to get this round and seal it. Need to stick to my order as much as possible.

Took notice of some wood that was cracking in the driveway today. Had to postpone the walnut rough outs for a day of more milling and prep and sealing. Stay tuned to see some exciting stuff soon. Story posting is active as always and gives further insights into my daily work flow. Dinner time now. Maybe some turning after. Cheers!

Bowls from my last blank run. 10 in total. Walnut, scarlet oak, black locust, and black cherry. Most around 10" diameter. All sealed with PVA. All these were done with a standard $100 chuck and a $60 M2 HSS bowl gouge. Standard 45/45 grind.

I hope that can instill some confidence in newer turners and help dispel some of the tool-centric nonsense that others end up trapped in.

Been working on surface finish consistency, at an aggressive cutting speed, along with process and shape consistency. I'm feeling pretty good, though output could still be higher. These took 2 days from milling to sealed and dated. Another run is coming up, will be mostly black locust, walnut, and sycamore. Stay tuned, thanks for those that follow. Can hardly believe I'm almost at 400. Cheers!

!!! LOUD !!! I'd rebuilt this saw totally about a year ago and had some cool plans for it. Finally got some time to do an experiment. One of the things I liked when I first saw this machine in disrepair, was that it could take a dado stack. Being a radial arm, that leads to some cool possibilities.

For my first tests I'm going to try bridging a crack in a blank, prior to turning, using a hardwood splint, going perpendicular to the grain. I have no idea if this will work nor any idea what it will look like after turning. Exciting. Stay tuned, follow, and watch story if interested.

Continuation from my story. After getting the balanced blank face flat, I make another adjustment of the tailstock position to adjust the final axis of the face and base of the bowl. This ensures one can use the material available how one sees fit.

In this case I have bark on one side of where the rim will go, and I want to bias the material removal to that side. So I tip the bowl in that direction and re-true. You can see the results of the "multi-axis" deal here. I always find it interesting to see how extreme the adjustments were. Check story to see more process.

Please follow along to appreciate my learning journey in this artisan trade. Hopefully you have fun, and maybe even get an insight through my learning process. And for those that already follow along, thank you! Almost to 400 followers and y'all's presence makes the journey sweet! Cheers! @ Asheville, North Carolina

Cherry. 12" diameter x 3.75" height x 1.125" walls. Multiple-feather mega crotch. Sealed with PVA. Slow cured. Still semi-green. Semi live-edge. No sanding. Off the tool surface.

I was posting about this on my story. This piece is a treasure piece; I've been taking my time with it. I've had to take careful steps to ensure the least amount of cracking happened. I reached a point of fatigue and was getting flustered with the transition so I sealed it until tomorrow. PVA has now dried, so the figure is showing excellently. Good time for a few pics. Outside shape mostly done now.

There are a couple piths in this piece and so far minimal to no cracking on each. Slow, slow cure. Careful eye paid to preventing any mold growth during this time. This will be turned to finish wall thickness from a semi-green state, sealed with a and carefully monitored until it is done drying. Final wall thickness will be 1/2" to 5/8". Have not decided yet. Can't wait to approach this with a fresh mind.
